The Tanaka engines are quite nice. Would consider getting one, but already have two.

Nice deal. Considered taking back the Toro I just got but I need attachment capability. The Toro is nice too, but not commercial grade like your Hitachi. TU/reps OP.

It's not, and definitely a not good in these small engines. People just don't like the inconvenience of mixing the oil/gas for some reason. However, it takes less time to mix then it does to type "I want a 4 stroke". Get the 2 cycle - use Tanaka oil if possible - and definitely use ETHANOL FREE GASOLINE. (most marina's sell it at a price, and can be found at smaller gas stations occasionally) Will run for decades if do! put Sea Foam in the mix as well. I've used 2 cycle trimmers for the longest time but maybe 18months ago switched over to a 4cycle. Aside from not having to mix gas and oil (can't count the number of times I have run out of oil but had plenty of gas left), the 4cycle trimmer has a noticeable reduction in vibration and is VERY easy to start. Id say 95% of the time its single pull.

my 4 cycle stihl died so in the market, will look into this. Just left HD an hour ago with two of those $19 garden carts.

Love Tanaka. I've been using one since 2000, a large one (42cc) and have a pole saw and hedge trimmer attachment.
The reason I bought it was a previous mfgr. one was killing my back. I'm tall and couldn't stand the pain. FWIW, I've been using any 2-stroke oil and oxygenated California gasoline in it. Took the muffler off a year ago and burned the carbon out of the spark arrestor using a torch. Helped with the throttle response. I thought about a four stroke trimmer. Mostly looking at the Honda and Stihls, for the reasons others have listed. But, newer 2 strokes have come a long way and the Tanakas have little vibration and are much easier to start. The comercial version has a system to make the pull start more effective with less effort. Most Tanakas are hundreds more just like the equivalent four strokes. The Honda was around $400.
I don't have the unit yet, but the reviews from those that have them say that these units have brought these in line with the benefits of the four strokes. If eveybody in the house can't start it simply then back it will go. The 7 year warranty is very nice |

I think exactly the opposite. I've literally had to to no maintenance to any of my 2 cycle engines (trimmer, leaf blower, chain saw..) other than to run them dry when they're not going to be used for a while. I'll gladly mix the fuel and put up with slightly more noise/vibration for a simple, maintenance free engine that starts every time. I buy a sixpack of synthetic motor oil and pop one in for every gallon. How tough is that? |
