It's not outdated for shooting candid pictures to be printed at 3"x5" up to 8"x10".
Think images of babies/toddlers/kids/pets -- it's very cost-effective for that purpose. The shutter speed is a significant advantage over a P&S. All of those subjects move before you can take a picture with a P&S.

Sure you can buy a more advanced camera for more money, I've got one. But at friends/family houses, I use an XTi and an XSi -- both of which are older cameras than this and they perform wonderfully for particularly candid kid pictures.
