Honestly even with the problems that the Sandforce controller has (something like a 10-15% defect rate), for $55 it is worth the risk.
Just keep data backups (which should be absolutely no problem to keep an image of a 60 GB drive) and you're getting a great deal here. Also, Microcenter has the same deal going for $5 cheaper AR, but it is an in-store only promotion. http://slickdeals.net/f/4156212-O...icrocenter The upside is that since this is a shell shocker, it may only be one day, while Microcenter's promotion runs until 4/15. Drive like the crucial m4 and samsung 830 offer very good performance and reliability by using a different controller. And their nand is better quality than the agility (I think...theres an awful lot of these drives!), but they cost more. The Intel 520 series uses the sandforce controller but Intel tested it on thousands of platforms for about 5 years worth of compressed testing. I suspect sandforce got at least some of those reliability and performance improvements. So you can get a 520 a get everything at a premium cost, an 830 or m4 and get excellent performance and reliability at a middling price, or go cheap on a basic sandforce with slower cheaper nand that wont last as long and pay a bargain price. I bought one of these drive, by the way. While its not the best or brightest its cheap and capable and it'll land in my kids old laptop in place of the 5 year old 5400rpm hard drive. A huge performance upgrade, its got a static load on it I can reload from backup in 5 minutes should the drive fail, and its not going to be in daily use so the longevity doesnt matter. Even at a lower performance level, the SSD for loading the OS and apps is pretty amazing. |

seems like there are a few sandforce haters today...
Most of the problems have been fixed by the firmware. These drives shouldn't give you any more crashes, data loss, or any other problem. There will be a few duds out there just like any other PC component though but not many. You shouldn't expect the drive to fail like others are claiming. I have had one and not had a single problem for months. You cant beat the price/performance ratio of sandforce drives in the sata 3 field right now. Very close to my personal limit -- if Amazon matches this (and saves me tax), I'm in! Will keep an eye on it, thanks for the post.
