I signed up my baby before she was born and have received 2 free books so far. They send one book a month.
They ask for Childs dob and parents information, address etc.

Also included if your child is in need are audio and brail books some are free and some are not.

You can also download free children’s books online.

As far as I know the only requirement is that the child be under the age of 18. I believe they do send out books based on the age of your child.
One of the books I received so far is -The Little Engine That Could-

Dear friend,

Thank you for your interest in my Imagination Library.

This program is one of the most important ways I know to improve the educational opportunities for children in your community.

When I was growing up in the hills of East Tennessee, I knew my dreams would come true. I know there are children in your community with their own dreams. They dream of becoming a doctor or an inventor or a minister. Who knows, maybe there is a little girl whose dream is to be a writer and singer.

The seeds of these dreams are often found in books and the seeds you help plant in your community can grow across the world.

I hope you'll agree to become a champion of the Imagination Library in your community. You will be amazed at the impact this simple gift can have on the lives of children and their families. We have seen it work in our backyard and I'm certain it can do the same in your community too!

I appreciate your interest in my Imagination Library and thank you for all you continue to do for children.

Dolly Parton

DOLLY PARTON’S IMAGINATION LIBRARY

Our Vision:
In 1996, Dolly Parton launched an exciting new effort, Dolly Parton's Imagination Library, to benefit the children of her home county in East Tennessee, USA. Dolly's vision was to foster a love of reading among her county’s preschool children and their families by providing them with the gift of a specially selected book each month. By mailing high quality, age-appropriate books directly to their homes, she wanted children to be excited about books and to feel the magic that books can create. Moreover, she could insure that every child would have books, regardless of their family’s income.

Making A Difference:
Dolly’s Imagination Library became so popular that in the year 2000 she announced that she would make the program available for replication to any community that was willing to partner with her to support it locally. Since the initial program launch in the United States, Dolly Parton's Imagination Library has gone from just a few dozen books to nearly 40,000,000 books mailed to children in the United States, into Canada and across the proverbial pond into the United Kingdom! Currently over 1600 local communities provide the Imagination Library to almost 700,000 children each and every month. Already statistics and independent reports have shown Dolly Parton's Imagination Library drastically improves early childhood literacy for children enrolled in the program. Further studies have shown improved scores during early literacy testing.

Moving Forward:
There is simply no limit on how far we can take this program and to what ends of the earth, but it is an absolute impossibility without your help. If your community or a community that you are aware of doesn't yet offer this proven early childhood literacy program, then we challenge you to Get Involved! It's actually quite easy to bring the Imagination Library to life in your community and we have an onslaught of available resources to help you Start A Program including a personal trainer which we like to call "Regional Director"! So come on, you can do it, follow this link to get a simple checklist of what you need to do to Get Onboard Dolly Parton's Imagination Library.

I'm in MI and it is available in my state.
Hmm I wonder how they pick what state/county qualifies for this. I'm in one of the richest county's in the US. Not that I'm rich, obviously not I'm on SD's, lol.

The website says it is only available in areas were there are affiliate volunteers who market the program to get it started. When I started to fill out the form and it said that it was not available in my area, it then prompted me to sign up as an affiliate for the Imagination Library. It said that after doing so, I would immediately be sent a starter packet and be assigned a regional director who would guide me through the steps of bringing the program to my area.

It sounds like it would work, but it's more effort than I'm interested in committing at this time. I have a 3 year-old and figured a free book or two for her would be cool, but I am not prepared to start a book/reading program for my whole community. Especially when, from my understanding, the books are simply mailed out from the warehouse location.. I wonder what the continued benefit of having local affiliates for the program would be?

you can go here and search for your county. I live in TX, it's available here in some counties, just not mine. CA also has several counties listed.
