personally, i make sure to sign up for the 5% cash back quarterly promos and use the freedom on those (groceries and movie theaters april-june). i would also look at their travel promotions through the rewards mall because they usually have some 5-10% bonuses for shopping through the rewards mall at outside merchants. lastly, if you ever have a poor customer service experience, you can call them and they will usually comp you a few hundred/thousand points for your trouble (i wouldn't abuse this last method as they keep track and abusing it could prevent you from receiving help when you truly do experience an issue).
