Reel mowers are really good for personal workouts... reel mower requires one to mow often in order to keep the grass from getting too long, which makes the work real hard. The width of the mower equates proportionately to the amount of effort required (more width = more strength to push).
I personally bought a German Reel mower (Brill Luxus 38 (cm)) in 2002, which cuts width is about 15.2 inches. any wider it makes it a bear to cut really tall grass manually. The one I have looks a bit different on the handles but mechanically is same as one below. These things are probably good to 1/4 acre or less, unless you're really into self punishment!
Not to mention they're not going to help you bag leaves if you use your mower for that. This would be great for someone with a very small yard though.
I bought this Fiskars Reel Mower for my Dad for Xmas and it's like no other Reel Mower on the market. You are right that many Reel Mowers have trouble going over big weeds. NOT THIS ONE!!! It sweeps through thick or thin grass, in one swipe, like butter. Fiskars has re-invented the Reel Mower and I highly recommend this item. You can also get the grass catcher on Amazon for this at http://www.amazon.com/Fiskars-Sta...657&sr=8-1. It works great! I'm getting three more today!
I've had this for a couple years. It works fantastic and is easy to push - probably same as a gas mower in terms of ease. You're not going to get much of a work out from it. Only issue is that there's no way to bag clippings / leaves. If you're not good about keeping an eye on your yard, tall grass could be an issue for cutting. If you're not bagging, you shouldn't be cutting more than an inch from the top at a time.
I used a Scott's reel mower 3 years ago and took it back the same night. I'm sure this Fiskars is better, but with the tough grass that I have to cut, I'm not going to take a chance on shipping one in from Amazon. If Lowe's nearby had one and I could try it out, I might do that.
Great deal for someone with less tough grass, though, OP. Thanks for the post.
