Free HHonors upgrade to GOLD

Now i know my Hilton rewards has no points earned or stays will they notice if i get a room at their locations? will i still be able to enjoy the privileges of gold status. Also is the only way to get these to do it through the hilton website itself or can you book it through travel websites? if anyone can provide a bit more info that would be great.
Or also how about if you have rewards points from credit cards would that help in this situation?

Anybody know how to navigate to a listing of hotels by category? I'm talking about point redemption categories here.

They will see that you are a Gold member and you will get the benefits of being a Gold member. They aren't going to look through your history and question why you're a gold member.

I've booked many times through Expedia and when I show up I give them my HHonors number and I get any upgrades being a Gold member entitles me to. Not sure if you get points or not though. I would assume the same works with booking hotels with rewards points. They don't care how you booked it.
