Not to take anything away from what you're saying (because it's right), but most everywhere I know uses additional verification steps so you can't randomly generate a card number and charge to it (eg. Requiring a billing address, card security code, expiration date, etc.)
All we're doing here is sharing a method to generate a random number that gets you past a splash page. Isn't that kinda the purpose of slickdeals?
You are correct that you almost always need additional information to process a transaction on a credit card number (generally an expiration date is the minimum additional information). But simply using the account number, by itself, is illegal. So it's still not a good idea to post entire CC numbers which could be valid.
(1) knowingly and with intent to defraud produces, uses, or traffics in one or more counterfeit access devices;
"Access device" is further defined as:
(e) As used in this section—
(1) the term “access device” means any card, plate, code, account number, electronic serial number, mobile identification number, personal identification number, or other telecommunications service, equipment, or instrument identifier, or other means of account access that can be used, alone or in conjunction with another access device, to obtain money, goods, services, or any other thing of value, or that can be used to initiate a transfer of funds (other than a transfer originated solely by paper instrument);
Since people are producing and using one or more access devices (ie: account numbers) with intent to defraud Hilton for something of value (Gold Status), you are technically in violation of this law.
Now, it's ridiculously unlikely that any of you would be charged or prosecuted for this, but that doesn't make it any less in violation of the federal statute. Which is why I said that people should not be posting the numbers they are using.
The earlier Hilton Gold promotion only required a valid IIN (first six digits) of a Visa Infinite card, but too many people abused that, so they switched to requiring the full account number.
Also, posting "valid" numbers is stupid and makes no sense. There is a very simple method to generate valid numbers. The formula has been posted here numerous times, and that's fine since it's common knowledge and basic math. But people are taking it a step too far imho. It's like telling people they need to come up with a number that's divisible by 2, and having dozens of people say:
"I used 16 and it worked!"
"I used 28 and it worked!"
"I used 29 and it didn't work "
It's stupid and it's pointless. And, it's illegal.
I imagine that the majority of the numbers people posted, while being valid in the scope of the formula, are probably not linked to valid accounts. But what if one/some are? How would you feel if you found YOUR credit card number posted on Slickdeals being used by people to scam Hilton for Gold status? What if Hilton only let's each card number be used once, and you tried your card number only to find that it didn't work because some schmuck used it before you? That's not right.
There is a big difference between a deal being "slick" and a deal crossing the line into blatant fraud. This is pretty close to the latter.
If you're going to use some random card number to take advantage of this promotion, at least be smart enough not to post the number you used online.
For upgrading a BestWestern rewards to Elite, what "proof" do you send in?
They are pretty open when it comes to "proof" for matching. I called them up and they said all you need to do is fill out the PDF form and email it to them with a copy of something showing your status. I sent in a screenshot of the Hilton.com webpage, and they said it would be fine.
It's been about two days though, and I haven't heard back yet. The CSR said it could take a few days to process it though.
in Virginia Beach, VA. I think the free room upgrade is available due to the slow season. (not gonna fly in peak season). You just mention that you are gold status and they will look it up your account name and give you whatever freebies available. I got the free room upgrade, free continental breakfast instead of 1000 HHpoints.
I'll be going to Puerto Rico at the end of the month, so I hope it works
For those that don't travel often.. You don't need your physical card for anything at all. You simply need your number on the reservation when you make it, or add it to your account manually with the confirmation #.
I never carry any of my frequent traveller cards with me, and I'm on the road about 10-15 days a month. This worked well for me, I've been mixing too many different hotels, so I only was silver in Hilton.
Few years back, I was platinum in Marriott and Starwood. Honestly, it gets you very little. The suite upgrades are overstated, however I did get a nice upgrade in Vegas when Starwood owned planet hollywood, but it's in Harrah's hand now.
That was easy...noticed my Gold status just expired (I'm at a Hilton property right now) and went through these steps. Got it to work with a single try. I suspect those who are having difficulty are either getting the captcha wrong or are not correctly entering their credit card number.
