I just purchased the Asus/AMD parts for a new build to unlock and overclock to get a bit of power from the CPU, i.e., 24/7 stable OC. I'm neither particularly interested in benchmarking results or looking to break records.
I only tested them (on top of the motherboard's cardboard box) to unlock the cores and for their stability. I never tried to overclock.
Either way, I don't think you'll see any significant gain in performance, the tasks you're looking to accomplish aren't really that hardware intensive. You can run a ton of tabs in any browser on a single core Atom. Saying "art programs" is pretty vague. MS Paint? Photoshop? AutoCAD?
If you can run the "art programs" you need to with the hardware you already have, and the only thing that you'd gain would be the ability to play HD videos with no stutter--just buy a low end video card. You can get a 5450 for ~$20.
tempted to upgrade and sell the old parts because Intel is better performing.
The new bundle seems to meet my needs, except it has Intel HD graphics which should be able to run 1080p videos.
Onboard graphics (the Intel HD takes care of this)
extensive multiple tab use in GC/IE
occasional 1080p video playback.
amd setup can do all this, plus run dual monitors... something you'd need a separate video card for with the intel setup as it has only a single hdmi output vs vga/dvi/hdmi on the amd....
the intel is a little faster... especially with media encoding... if you have money to burn, or have a sucker.. err, buyer, already lined up to take your amd parts for at least your cost... then go for it.. otherwise i don't really see a point unless you *need* that extra performance.. and from what you've provided, you don't.. our dual cores w/ 8gb would be enough for you.
and if you do switch to the intel.. then prepare for yet another upgrade possibility when ivy drops... the cycle will never end: there will always be another deal, and better parts. it's up to you do decide when to stop dealing and when to start building and actually using what you've bought.
When you buy more, you save more. And when you save more, you can buy more.
And when you buy more, you save more. It all starts when you BUY MORE.
mine is a work horse machine. it drains cpu workload and especially ram usage. art programs and heavy internet browsing easily bottlenecks the CPU and RAM. this is of course on my sig's workstation.
the newly purchased Asus/960T system above hasn't been tested but based on what you guys are saying i'm planning on keeping it and unlocking and overclocking it to a 24/7 stable configuration. hopefully it will be good enough with 8gb ram.
