Make sure you know what it means to run a server without ECC RAM, regardless of whether it's in a home environment or not. The more memory you have and the more memory you use the more important it is to have ECC. Obviously if your server performs desktop duties then disregard. In fact, that PDF you've linked to above concludes that only 8% of DIMMs saw at least one correctable error per year. Per year. And those were the bad DIMMs, installed in servers running 24/7. Their research also suggests that some DIMMs displayed a lot of errors. This is not at all surprising, a bad ram chip gets through testing every so often. Further, this research does not address the fact that only a small proportion of errors will result in actual data corruption. This depends largely on how the operating system and file system use memory. The evidence suggests to me ECC is over rated for home users. Especially when considering high quality memory like this. The all time low was $30 for a few days in November of last year. Given the time period, it was probably a Black Friday deal. A rule of thumb I personally use for critical data (i.e. documents, photos, etc.) is to create regular checksums of those directories. Memory is not the only cause of silent data corruption [zdnet.com]. I personally use this [getmd5checker.com] tool to checksum those directories so I can see if the data was inadvertently corrupted. If it was, I restore from backup. Over the course of a year, this saves me from losing a few files on average. This is a larger problem on Windows (NTFS and especially FAT32) than it is on other OS's with more robust filesystems. |
