Actually, I know it is true that AT&T will add a data plan if they notice that you are using a smart phone. I wanted to try this, so I checked out various sources (customer reps, sales employees at local stores, online forums, etc) to get a idea of this, but I wasn’t sure how they were going to do it. Around the beginning of this year, I connected my 2nd line using a generic Samsung phone with an out of contract iphone4 (converted sim card to microsim), and it worked like a charm. About 3 months later, my wife had mistakenly sent a data usage text request, and the day after AT&T had added a data plan. I am guessing that the text request hit their SMS server, and our acct were caught, and automatically a data plan was added. I guess it is also possible that they periodically check for smartphones without data plan… I will never be sure of what happened though... |

This is true to some degree. If you're currently under a contract that has a phone with non-smartphone data plan (MediaNet plan) then you might not work. You cannot cancel the data plan, and AT&T will upgrade you automatically......Then again you might be able to bar data from being sent to the phone, but you would likely still have to pay for the data of the original plan. If you do have an old MediaNet plan, and want to keep it...do no use an iPhone or AT&T branded smart phone. Use an unlocked phone [xda-developers.com] that is quad band that isn't being carried by AT&T and you should be able to keep on using it. |
