Deal Details

Probably not a deal but 9to5Mac just reported that AT&T will start unlocking iPhone in good standing. Here is the statement on 9to5Mac [9to5mac.com]

“Beginning Sunday, April 8, we will offer qualifying customers the ability to unlock their AT&T iPhones. The only requirements are that a customer’s account must be in good standing, their device cannot be associated with a current and active term commitment on an AT&T customer account, and they need to have fulfilled their contract term, upgraded under one of our upgrade policies or paid an early termination fee.”

Apparently it's due to the many complaints that Tim Cook's office received from AT&T customers. I would like to think that the SD community has a lot to do with that.

new process you have to go to this website for unlock

https://www.att.com/deviceunlock/client/en_US/

According to AT&T, 4/28 was the last day that they will unlock iphones for people without AT&T service. A memo was sent to all reps. If you have a case that was opened before 4/28, you are still good to go and should get your unlock.

For those eligible to unlock the process is immediate- no more case numbers. ATT can input the IMEI and unlock in a few mins- just did this today

those who have att case submitted try this with sam:-
This is how i unlocked video

Check unlock:
iphoneox.coml

[Guide] Unlock Your iPhone Without Losing Your Untethered Jailbreak [unlockboot.com]

If eligible, it is possible to have the iPhone 3G and 3GS unlocked immediately. AT&T will generate a ticket and respond anywhere from 1-7 days for those with an iPhone 4.

Quote from jazbati :
Just called (611 from my AT&T phone). Rep confirmed that my phone was out of contract and there were no outstanding dues. Also asked for my IMEI number. Transferred me to tech support. Tech support sent me an e mail with a pdf attachment which contains the following instructions
The Csr rep tried to tell me if you are an excessive data user, you are not eligible, this is not true for unlimited dat plan customers. (of which I am an excessive data user with unlimited)

To complete the unlock, simply:
1. Open iTunes on your Mac or PC and verify that you have internet connectivity.
2. Connect your iPhone using the dock connector to USB cable that came with your iPhone.
3. Backup and restore your iPhone using iTunes .
For information on backup and restore, please visit http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414.
4. After restoring, your iPhone will be unlocked.

So apparently you only have to restore your phone and itunes realizes that Apple has removed lock from your phone. There are no codes etc to enter like with other phones.
This is my personal 3G phone which I got from AT&T and was under contract for 2 years.
Rep told me you can unlock only 5 phones in 12 months. I had unlocked 2 AT&T go phones from a earlier slickdeal.

Happy unlocking to all.

update from puneet_pal
I just got my iPhone 4 unlocked through AT&T tech support, It was a wait of over 20 mins but worth it after I got the unlock confirmation email from AT&T. After this I followed the steps mentioned in that email (same as above steps) and bingo I got a message that your iPhone is now unlocked. But by doing this all my apps are lost and I cannot seem to recover those from my backup. But it doesnt matter to me but may be few of you may not like this.

update:
Follow my steps and you will get your phone unlocked:
Email icare3@amcustomercare.att-mail.com and let them know you have purchased the phone at full retail price.
State that your contract has ended.
You will get an email saying they need proof and proof must be faxed.
Email back and state that you no longer have proof.
You will get another email stating that you can go back and get the proof
Email back and state that you have tried and the store no longer gives out receipt thats over one year old
You will get a case number
Email back and state you are going out of country in 3 days.
You will get an email stating that your phone has been unlocked.

I have an Iphone 4 with active contract. just FYI.

Good luck.

How to check IMEI
1. *#06#
2. Setting > General > About > IMEI
3. On the Sim Tray.
4. google tinyumbrella
5. through itunes's setting

Questions:
1). What is the from address of unlock instructions email ?
Answer: G10210@ATT.com for me (bluekiwi)
2). If I have unlocked and jailbreak phone, still the steps are same OR do we have to take any additional precautions ?
Answer: http://unlockboot.com/2012/04/unlock-your-iphone-without-losing-your.html (harrychang)

....--- The status check tool may give you incorrect information. My iphone 4s was unlocked last week but the tool still shows it is locked to at&t. I called Apple and confirmed it is indeed unlocked.
In the morning when I checked the status of my phone it said Factory Locked= YES, but now it does not even shows Factory Locked heading anymore and it says Authorized unlock possible. What does this mean? I am still waiting for the e-mail from ATT.

If it's true, this is awesome news. Over the years AT&T had always unlocked my phones both during and after contract. The biggest reason being travel overseas. But iPhone was never part of that offering. My family has 4 iPhones that have fulfilled their contract. Would be sweet if they unlock all of them. We shall see.

OMG.... Finally...
lost hopes with Dev team,
every one tried their best - but unfortunately every one gave up support for iPhone 4, since 4S is out & no one saw a potential reason to still work on iPhone 4.

Good news for ebay flippers...

--> Can I use my Girlfriends At&t sim in my iPhone & call help desk requesting for unlock??.
--> Will they really check my Phone Num Vs IMEI related??
--> or will they just unlock it???

(I am using my iPhone 4 on Straighttalk)

My friend has an iPhone 3GS that he no longer needs because he got a better phone. I have an AT&T monthly plan, but do not have and do not want data plans on it. Can I use my friend's iPhone on the AT&T network without paying for a data plan? Thanks.

I was one of those people that got the forward from Tim Cook over to AT&T Partnership Ops.

Glad to see this is happening finally across the board. AT&T was really behind times on this one.

I guess the iPhone 4S wont be getting unlocked then, but the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 will be for most.

Yes, we have a 3GS on our family plan which has no data plan associated with it for months now.

Thanks for the reply. When I called AT&T to ask, the representative said that as soon as they notice I am using a iPhone, they will attach a data plan to my account and charge me for it. I just want to use the iPhone as a regular phone and for Wifi; I don't need 3G.

I too was sick of At&t data charge, with out even asking me.
I now use Straight talk on iPhone.
$45 / month gives you unlimited everything..

I keep buying phones on Craigslist & change different phone every three months.
I am having so much fun now...

That's just money-grabbing BS they're going to tell you.

We've been using one for months (about a year now) without data. I was the one to call-in and tell them that we want all data services barred for that phone.

They can definitely do it.

This is awesome, I was trying to unlock an old 3g for one of the kiddos the other day and just couldn't bring myself to upgrading the baseband to 6.15, now I just have to be patient and see how this unfolds.
