Probably not a deal but 9to5Mac just reported that AT&T will start unlocking iPhone in good standing. Here is the statement on 9to5Mac [9to5mac.com]

"Beginning Sunday, April 8, we will offer qualifying customers the ability to unlock their AT&T iPhones. The only requirements are that a customer's account must be in good standing, their device cannot be associated with a current and active term commitment on an AT&T customer account, and they need to have fulfilled their contract term, upgraded under one of our upgrade policies or paid an early termination fee."

Apparently it's due to the many complaints that Tim Cook's office received from AT&T customers. I would like to think that the SD community has a lot to do with that.

new process you have to go to this website for unlock

https://www.att.com/deviceunlock/client/en_US/

According to AT&T, 4/28 was the last day that they will unlock iphones for people without AT&T service. A memo was sent to all reps. If you have a case that was opened before 4/28, you are still good to go and should get your unlock.

For those eligible to unlock the process is immediate- no more case numbers. ATT can input the IMEI and unlock in a few mins- just did this today

those who have att case submitted try this with sam:-
This is how i unlocked video

Check unlock:

If eligible, it is possible to have the iPhone 3G and 3GS unlocked immediately. AT&T will generate a ticket and respond anywhere from 1-7 days for those with an iPhone 4.

Quote from jazbati :
Just called (611 from my AT&T phone). Rep confirmed that my phone was out of contract and there were no outstanding dues. Also asked for my IMEI number. Transferred me to tech support. Tech support sent me an e mail with a pdf attachment which contains the following instructions
The Csr rep tried to tell me if you are an excessive data user, you are not eligible, this is not true for unlimited dat plan customers. (of which I am an excessive data user with unlimited)

To complete the unlock, simply:
1. Open iTunes on your Mac or PC and verify that you have internet connectivity.
2. Connect your iPhone using the dock connector to USB cable that came with your iPhone.
3. Backup and restore your iPhone using iTunes .
For information on backup and restore, please visit http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414.
4. After restoring, your iPhone will be unlocked.

So apparently you only have to restore your phone and itunes realizes that Apple has removed lock from your phone. There are no codes etc to enter like with other phones.
This is my personal 3G phone which I got from AT&T and was under contract for 2 years.
Rep told me you can unlock only 5 phones in 12 months. I had unlocked 2 AT&T go phones from a earlier slickdeal.

Happy unlocking to all.

update from puneet_pal
I just got my iPhone 4 unlocked through AT&T tech support, It was a wait of over 20 mins but worth it after I got the unlock confirmation email from AT&T. After this I followed the steps mentioned in that email (same as above steps) and bingo I got a message that your iPhone is now unlocked. But by doing this all my apps are lost and I cannot seem to recover those from my backup. But it doesnt matter to me but may be few of you may not like this.

update:
Follow my steps and you will get your phone unlocked:
Email icare3@amcustomercare.att-mail.com and let them know you have purchased the phone at full retail price.
State that your contract has ended.
You will get an email saying they need proof and proof must be faxed.
Email back and state that you no longer have proof.
You will get another email stating that you can go back and get the proof
Email back and state that you have tried and the store no longer gives out receipt thats over one year old
You will get a case number
Email back and state you are going out of country in 3 days.
You will get an email stating that your phone has been unlocked.

I have an Iphone 4 with active contract. just FYI.

Good luck.

How to check IMEI
1. *#06#
2. Setting > General > About > IMEI
3. On the Sim Tray.
4. google tinyumbrella
5. through itunes's setting

Questions:
1). What is the from address of unlock instructions email ?
Answer: G10210@ATT.com for me (bluekiwi)
2). If I have unlocked and jailbreak phone, still the steps are same OR do we have to take any additional precautions ?
Answer: http://unlockboot.com/2012/04/unlock-your-iphone-without-losing-your.html (harrychang)

....--- The status check tool may give you incorrect information. My iphone 4s was unlocked last week but the tool still shows it is locked to at&t. I called Apple and confirmed it is indeed unlocked.
In the morning when I checked the status of my phone it said Factory Locked= YES, but now it does not even shows Factory Locked heading anymore and it says Authorized unlock possible. What does this mean? I am still waiting for the e-mail from ATT.

wouldnt suprise me if att is giving these case numbers that will be "resolved" on the 16th just so people don't argue with them on the phone and tie up reps for hours and they can process thier paying customers unlocks quicker for those that have been waiting..

come the 16.. everyone will get emails saying.. we have reviewed your request...and blah blah blah.. NO... sorry.. but we'd like to offer you this special deal of $X off your first month and no activation fee if you switch to at&t today..lol

If that's what they're doing, it's a terribly inefficient way of getting people off the phone. I was on the phone with a rep for a good half hour yesterday getting case numbers.

But if they told you no.. You'd ask for a supervisor, want to explaing your "unique" situation and then keep calling back hoping to get a rep that will make an exception.. But it is true that the phones would be busy on the 16th..but they have your email for the upsell..lol

I'll answer one question: Apple is no longer signing 5.0.1.

Use Ifaith to save your current firmware shsh blobs. It will even work on iOS 5 as long as the device is vulnerable with limera1n exploit. It will not downgrade your baseband though and iPad 2 and iPhone 4s are not supported.

I bought the phone from craiglist also. What type of questions do they ask? Plz tell what I need to do or how to approach them?
Thanks in advance
They started off by checking if my account is still under contract (they wont do it if there is a contract remaining on ur account). Then they transfer you to the tech department where they figure out if the phone has been associated with a line with a contract. If you pass those two steps, you can get an unlock and you just restore for the unlock. No tricks or anything, pretty straight forward.

3GS unlocked with no problems. Thanks OP.
Did you have to backup and restore through ITunes? How long did you have to wait after putting in the request? Thx.

I just spoke to a rep at AT&T who pointed out that not all iPhones were eligible to be unlocked. When I asked him where I could see what models were available he was unable to provide me with this info, so I then told him that after reading the conditions for unlocking as published by AT&T that my iPhone 4S did qualify, as follows

1. Not under a current contract
2. That my account was in good standing ( as I do not even have an account)
3. That an early termination fee had been paid.

He relented and agreed with me and issued me a case number to have it unlocked. Here is a link that helped my argument.
