Probably not a deal but 9to5Mac just reported that AT&T will start unlocking iPhone in good standing. Here is the statement on 9to5Mac [9to5mac.com]

“Beginning Sunday, April 8, we will offer qualifying customers the ability to unlock their AT&T iPhones. The only requirements are that a customer’s account must be in good standing, their device cannot be associated with a current and active term commitment on an AT&T customer account, and they need to have fulfilled their contract term, upgraded under one of our upgrade policies or paid an early termination fee.”

Apparently it's due to the many complaints that Tim Cook's office received from AT&T customers. I would like to think that the SD community has a lot to do with that.

new process you have to go to this website for unlock

https://www.att.com/deviceunlock/client/en_US/

According to AT&T, 4/28 was the last day that they will unlock iphones for people without AT&T service. A memo was sent to all reps. If you have a case that was opened before 4/28, you are still good to go and should get your unlock.

For those eligible to unlock the process is immediate- no more case numbers. ATT can input the IMEI and unlock in a few mins- just did this today

those who have att case submitted try this with sam:-
This is how i unlocked video

Check unlock:

[Guide] Unlock Your iPhone Without Losing Your Untethered Jailbreak [unlockboot.com]

If eligible, it is possible to have the iPhone 3G and 3GS unlocked immediately. AT&T will generate a ticket and respond anywhere from 1-7 days for those with an iPhone 4.

Quote from jazbati :
Just called (611 from my AT&T phone). Rep confirmed that my phone was out of contract and there were no outstanding dues. Also asked for my IMEI number. Transferred me to tech support. Tech support sent me an e mail with a pdf attachment which contains the following instructions
The Csr rep tried to tell me if you are an excessive data user, you are not eligible, this is not true for unlimited dat plan customers. (of which I am an excessive data user with unlimited)

To complete the unlock, simply:
1. Open iTunes on your Mac or PC and verify that you have internet connectivity.
2. Connect your iPhone using the dock connector to USB cable that came with your iPhone.
3. Backup and restore your iPhone using iTunes .
For information on backup and restore, please visit http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414.
4. After restoring, your iPhone will be unlocked.

So apparently you only have to restore your phone and itunes realizes that Apple has removed lock from your phone. There are no codes etc to enter like with other phones.
This is my personal 3G phone which I got from AT&T and was under contract for 2 years.
Rep told me you can unlock only 5 phones in 12 months. I had unlocked 2 AT&T go phones from a earlier slickdeal.

Happy unlocking to all.

update from puneet_pal
I just got my iPhone 4 unlocked through AT&T tech support, It was a wait of over 20 mins but worth it after I got the unlock confirmation email from AT&T. After this I followed the steps mentioned in that email (same as above steps) and bingo I got a message that your iPhone is now unlocked. But by doing this all my apps are lost and I cannot seem to recover those from my backup. But it doesnt matter to me but may be few of you may not like this.

update:
Follow my steps and you will get your phone unlocked:
Email icare3@amcustomercare.att-mail.com and let them know you have purchased the phone at full retail price.
State that your contract has ended.
You will get an email saying they need proof and proof must be faxed.
Email back and state that you no longer have proof.
You will get another email stating that you can go back and get the proof
Email back and state that you have tried and the store no longer gives out receipt thats over one year old
You will get a case number
Email back and state you are going out of country in 3 days.
You will get an email stating that your phone has been unlocked.

I have an Iphone 4 with active contract. just FYI.

Good luck.

How to check IMEI
1. *#06#
2. Setting > General > About > IMEI
3. On the Sim Tray.
4. google tinyumbrella
5. through itunes's setting

Questions:
1). What is the from address of unlock instructions email ?
Answer: G10210@ATT.com for me (bluekiwi)
2). If I have unlocked and jailbreak phone, still the steps are same OR do we have to take any additional precautions ?
Answer: http://unlockboot.com/2012/04/unlock-your-iphone-without-losing-your.html (harrychang)

....--- The status check tool may give you incorrect information. My iphone 4s was unlocked last week but the tool still shows it is locked to at&t. I called Apple and confirmed it is indeed unlocked.
In the morning when I checked the status of my phone it said Factory Locked= YES, but now it does not even shows Factory Locked heading anymore and it says Authorized unlock possible. What does this mean? I am still waiting for the e-mail from ATT.

uninstall ultrasnow and go to setting > reset > reset network settings and it might help (it did with one of mine that just keep loosing connection after the unlock)

good luck
I don't have Ultrasn0w installed with the 5.1 jailbreak, I had it prior to the AT&T unlock. Thanks for the tip, I will still try the netwrok reset and see what happens.

Just for fun, here is my ATT chat transcript from 4/12. I have terminated my contract with them, switched to H2O and my number ported in within a few hours, both voice and 3G data work fine. Warning though, I lost access to the my account management right away, so save all bills/statements that you need before porting the number. Now I'm having a hard time paying the ETF, it looks like I need to wait to receive a printed bill with the ETF, which will happen a week after my next billing cycle. These guys really don't want my money.

Chat InformationYou are now chatting with 'Amy Johnson'
Amy Johnson: Mr. ******, Thank you for completing the pre-chat survey. I will be more than happy to assist you with unlocking iPhones. It is my priority to resolve this for you today.
******: thank you!
******: I purchased my phone in August 2010, so my two years are not up yet, however I'm traveling overseas in July and would like to use my phone with a local carrier:
******: I'll be in Romania for a month and I need to receive calls by local friends
******: is there any way to have my phone unlocked, I could pre-pay the remaining months on my contract if that helps
Amy Johnson: Mr. ******, Can I please have the IMEI for the device you are requesting the unlock code for? You may obtain this number by entering *#06# on your phone.
******: nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn
Amy Johnson: Mr. ******, To have the iPhone unlocked you would need to be out of contract. AT&T can not charge you for the early termination fee unless you have been cancelled. Then the final bill and balance need to be paid before the unlock code is provided.
******: I see, this seems to be contrary to the interests of AT&T though: basically in order to get what I need, I have to stop being your customer. As I said, would it help if I pay now the remaining months on my contract?
Amy Johnson: AT&T can not bill you for the remaining number of months on your contract unless the service is cancelled.
******: What would the ETF be for me if I cancel my contract now?
Amy Johnson: The ETF is $135.00.
******: So if I pay the ETF and (I understand) the unlock fee I could get my phone unlocked?
Amy Johnson: You would need to cancel your service. Then when your final bill prints which will be after April 26, 2012 and you pay the balance then AT&T can provide you the unlock code.
Amy Johnson: Mr. ******, Are you still in this chat session with me? I have not heard from you for a few minutes.
******: yes, I'm trying to decide
******: Is there a supervisor that could review my request?
Amy Johnson: Yes there is a supervisor, with the unlock code the information I have provided you is standard across all of AT&T. One moment I will see if a supervisor is available.
******: Thank you!
Amy Johnson: One moment please I will transfer you now.
******: thank you
Chat InformationPlease wait while I transfer the chat to 'Chris Hynes'.
Chat InformationYou are now chatting with 'Chris Hynes'
Chris Hynes: Thank you for holding, my name is Chris Hynes and I am a team manager with AT&T as I understand it you wish to have your iPhone unlock is this correct.
******: correct, do you have access to the original chat session?
Chris Hynes: I do.
Chris Hynes: From what I see from both the chat, and the account, the device you want to unlock is not elgibile for unlocking. At this time we could not unlock it.
******: What I am trying to do is to remain an ATT contract customer and it seems my only option is to stop being one...
******: If you look at my usage pattern you can see I use very little of my allotted minutes and data, so it would be more cost effective for me to switch to GoPhone
Chris Hynes: I understand were you are coming from, but we do have very stringent unlock policy for the iPhone.
Chris Hynes: Your account and device do not meet those policies.
******: OK, so if I canceled my contract, paid the ETF and switched to GoPhone, what do I need to do?
Chris Hynes: If you do cancel service to get the unlock code, please note you would need to pay the Early Termination Fee and your final invoice before you could get the unlock code and the account would be closed, you would no longer have your number associated with the device, we do not allow the practise of just buying out your contract.
Chris Hynes: If at that time you want to get a GoPhone service you can do so, just so you are aware, the iPhones cannot be used on goPhone service, the data part of them will not work.
******: That's not what I'm reading on the GoPhone site, quite to the contrary they are saying that smartphone users *have* to purchase a data package
Chris Hynes: iPhones are not able to be used on it though, only certain SmartPhones that are offered through goPhone.
Chris Hynes: GoPhone discontinued allowing iPhones to be activated with them early in 2011.
******: ok, thank you
Chris Hynes: At this time, was there anything further I can do for you tonight?
******: nope, thanks
Chris Hynes: We realize that you have a choice in Wireless providers and thank you for giving us the opportunity to assist you today. We appreciate your business and thank you for visiting AT&T’s Live Support Chat.

Please click the close button to end your session. A customer satisfaction survey will automatically appear and we appreciate your feedback.

Wow, leave it to AT&T to turn a good thing into a fiasco and lose customers by not allowing a work around for an unlock. Why not take the ETF, without requiring you to cancel, then unlock the phone and keep the customer. They could boost revenue by millions. But no, they choose to just piss people off instead.

There was a post link to youtube post a while ago. I copy it and email them just change imei numbers, something like this

To Whom It May Concern,

I have an off-contract IPhone which is locked by AT&T.
Since I live in China I don't have an AT&T account or AT&T wireless number.

I am willing to request an unlock code via Email.

I am NOT an at&t customer. I first called in on like the 20th and they gave me est date of callback of the 30th. I called today (30th) and found out my case # has been approved. So I submitted my base before the 28th and got my approval after the 28th.

Via what method? I'm assuming you happened to get the right person because only some reps have access to the white list.

How do they do it? Do they just tell you to sync your phone once you hang up and its good to go?

To the last few people posting about recent unlocks as well as pending unlocks....are you guys ATT subscribers? Just curious to see if non-customers are still getting unlocks after the given April 28 deadline.
I don't think i have ever been an ATT cell subscriber, got approved to unlock phone.
