Probably not a deal but 9to5Mac just reported that AT&T will start unlocking iPhone in good standing. Here is the statement on 9to5Mac [9to5mac.com]

“Beginning Sunday, April 8, we will offer qualifying customers the ability to unlock their AT&T iPhones. The only requirements are that a customer’s account must be in good standing, their device cannot be associated with a current and active term commitment on an AT&T customer account, and they need to have fulfilled their contract term, upgraded under one of our upgrade policies or paid an early termination fee.”

Apparently it's due to the many complaints that Tim Cook's office received from AT&T customers. I would like to think that the SD community has a lot to do with that.

new process you have to go to this website for unlock

https://www.att.com/deviceunlock/client/en_US/

According to AT&T, 4/28 was the last day that they will unlock iphones for people without AT&T service. A memo was sent to all reps. If you have a case that was opened before 4/28, you are still good to go and should get your unlock.

For those eligible to unlock the process is immediate- no more case numbers. ATT can input the IMEI and unlock in a few mins- just did this today

those who have att case submitted try this with sam:-
This is how i unlocked video

[Guide] Unlock Your iPhone Without Losing Your Untethered Jailbreak [unlockboot.com]

If eligible, it is possible to have the iPhone 3G and 3GS unlocked immediately. AT&T will generate a ticket and respond anywhere from 1-7 days for those with an iPhone 4.

Quote from jazbati :
Just called (611 from my AT&T phone). Rep confirmed that my phone was out of contract and there were no outstanding dues. Also asked for my IMEI number. Transferred me to tech support. Tech support sent me an e mail with a pdf attachment which contains the following instructions
The Csr rep tried to tell me if you are an excessive data user, you are not eligible, this is not true for unlimited dat plan customers. (of which I am an excessive data user with unlimited)

To complete the unlock, simply:
1. Open iTunes on your Mac or PC and verify that you have internet connectivity.
2. Connect your iPhone using the dock connector to USB cable that came with your iPhone.
3. Backup and restore your iPhone using iTunes .
For information on backup and restore, please visit http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414.
4. After restoring, your iPhone will be unlocked.

So apparently you only have to restore your phone and itunes realizes that Apple has removed lock from your phone. There are no codes etc to enter like with other phones.
This is my personal 3G phone which I got from AT&T and was under contract for 2 years.
Rep told me you can unlock only 5 phones in 12 months. I had unlocked 2 AT&T go phones from a earlier slickdeal.

Happy unlocking to all.

update from puneet_pal
I just got my iPhone 4 unlocked through AT&T tech support, It was a wait of over 20 mins but worth it after I got the unlock confirmation email from AT&T. After this I followed the steps mentioned in that email (same as above steps) and bingo I got a message that your iPhone is now unlocked. But by doing this all my apps are lost and I cannot seem to recover those from my backup. But it doesnt matter to me but may be few of you may not like this.

update:
Follow my steps and you will get your phone unlocked:
Email icare3@amcustomercare.att-mail.com and let them know you have purchased the phone at full retail price.
State that your contract has ended.
You will get an email saying they need proof and proof must be faxed.
Email back and state that you no longer have proof.
You will get another email stating that you can go back and get the proof
Email back and state that you have tried and the store no longer gives out receipt thats over one year old
You will get a case number
Email back and state you are going out of country in 3 days.
You will get an email stating that your phone has been unlocked.

I have an Iphone 4 with active contract. just FYI.

Good luck.

How to check IMEI
1. *#06#
2. Setting > General > About > IMEI
3. On the Sim Tray.
4. google tinyumbrella
5. through itunes's setting

Questions:
1). What is the from address of unlock instructions email ?
Answer: G10210@ATT.com for me (bluekiwi)
2). If I have unlocked and jailbreak phone, still the steps are same OR do we have to take any additional precautions ?
Answer: http://unlockboot.com/2012/04/unlock-your-iphone-without-losing-your.html (harrychang)

....--- The status check tool may give you incorrect information. My iphone 4s was unlocked last week but the tool still shows it is locked to at&t. I called Apple and confirmed it is indeed unlocked.
In the morning when I checked the status of my phone it said Factory Locked= YES, but now it does not even shows Factory Locked heading anymore and it says Authorized unlock possible. What does this mean? I am still waiting for the e-mail from ATT.

Update! I just got a response from my e-mail method. Damn rejected! Submitted on the 17th too.

"AT&T will unlock an iPhone under the following circumstances: the person
requesting the unlock is a current AT&T customer or a former AT&T
customer who can provide the phone number or account number for the
account; the iPhone was designed for use on AT&T?s network; all contract
obligations, including any term commitment, associated with the device
to be unlocked have been fully satisfied; the iPhone has not been
reported lost or stolen. Also, current customer accounts must be in good
standing with no past-due amount or unpaid balance and has been active
for at least sixty (60) days. Former customer account may be eligible
for unlocking so long as they owe AT&T no Early Termination Fee or other
unpaid balance. AT&T will unlock an iPhone for an active and deployed
member of the military who is a current AT&T customer in good standing
and is able to provide AT&T with deployment verification; and a person
who purchased the iPhone from an authorized location at the 'no
commitment' price and can provide proof of purchase."

If anyone here is an AT&T customer in good standing and is willing to make the phone call for me, I'd be willing to pay 25. Please message me. I fear this is the only way I can get my iphone unlocked!
Nobody wants to make an easy $25?

Regardless if they are in good standing, it also depends on the background of your phone. If you can find a person with a business account, it would really help since those techs are really liberal with unlocks.

Please please help, this is getting really ridiculous....so I sent an unlock request APril 16th got an email back that phone is eligible for unlock on the 18th. I never got any emails back that the unlock was done.

I called April 30th to AT&T and they said that the case was resolved just the email did not come through and he said just restore your phone through itunes and you are done. I did that but never saw a message saying phone is unlocked like some s'ders have posted here.

So I called AT&T back yesterday only to stay on the phone for 2 hours and this lady there says from their end it is unlocked and she does not know why no message shows up she made me re-restore the phone . Did it again no message. She finally transfers me to apple support for them to tell me that it still shows locked to AT&T on their end. A supervisor comes on the phone from Apple and says he chatted with AT&T and they say its unlocked from their end. He wanted me to insert a another carriers sim to check it, but I have no non at&t freinds or relatives Frown He finally said he will have his engineers take a look and resolve it in 6 hrs, no news after that.

I called back today to Apple and they say still shows locked to AT&T Frown called AT&T they say it is unlocked from their end. Insert a foreign sim and re-restore and if you have a problem call Apple Frown

Am I going anything wrong with the restore process?? Or is At&T just making me run around the bush? I need to send this phone to my sister in India, I already promised her Frown Please help....

I'm pretty sure you need a non AT&T SIM to trigger the unlocking process.

My iphone never showed unlocked when I did the restore either. However I stuck a tmobile sim (got on the .99 deal) and after a moment it showed tmobile as the carrier. I'm not sure why some people are getting the unlocked message and others (like myself) are not.

It may work for some, but mine wouldn't trigger the unlock process until I put in the T-Mobile SIM. I wouldn't assume anything is broken on AT&T or Apple's end until after trying the non AT&T SIM.

Did you restore with the t-mobile sim or just sync?

Go to a store, pick up a $10 pre-paid sim, cut it, and try it (or easier, get a T-Mobile microsim). Calling back and forth between new reps each time wont solve anything and you won't ever know until you send it to India and find out the hard way.

Just sync on an iPhone 3G. Had to do a deactivate, then reactivate on an iPhone 4 because just syncing didn't do it.
