Probably not a deal but 9to5Mac just reported that AT&T will start unlocking iPhone in good standing. Here is the statement on 9to5Mac [9to5mac.com]

“Beginning Sunday, April 8, we will offer qualifying customers the ability to unlock their AT&T iPhones. The only requirements are that a customer’s account must be in good standing, their device cannot be associated with a current and active term commitment on an AT&T customer account, and they need to have fulfilled their contract term, upgraded under one of our upgrade policies or paid an early termination fee.”

Apparently it's due to the many complaints that Tim Cook's office received from AT&T customers. I would like to think that the SD community has a lot to do with that.

My friend has an iPhone 3GS that he no longer needs because he got a better phone. I have an AT&T monthly plan, but do not have and do not want data plans on it. Can I use my friend's iPhone on the AT&T network without paying for a data plan? Thanks.
As a former AT&T employee I can tell you with 100% certainty this is impossible, I've seen people try countless times and AT&T will automatically add the largest data plan available to your plan once you put your sim into the iPhone

That's just money-grabbing BS they're going to tell you.

We've been using one for months (about a year now) without data. I was the one to call-in and tell them that we want all data services barred for that phone.

They can definitely do it.

Actually, I know it is true that AT&T will add a data plan if they notice that you are using a smart phone. I wanted to try this, so I checked out various sources (customer reps, sales employees at local stores, online forums, etc) to get a idea of this, but I wasn’t sure how they were going to do it. Around the beginning of this year, I connected my 2nd line using a generic Samsung phone with an out of contract iphone4 (converted sim card to microsim), and it worked like a charm. About 3 months later, my wife had mistakenly sent a data usage text request, and the day after AT&T had added a data plan.

I am guessing that the text request hit their SMS server, and our acct were caught, and automatically a data plan was added. I guess it is also possible that they periodically check for smartphones without data plan… I will never be sure of what happened though...

This is true to some degree. If you're currently under a contract that has a phone with non-smartphone data plan (MediaNet plan) then you might not work. You cannot cancel the data plan, and AT&T will upgrade you automatically......Then again you might be able to bar data from being sent to the phone, but you would likely still have to pay for the data of the original plan.

If you do have an old MediaNet plan, and want to keep it...do no use an iPhone or AT&T branded smart phone. Use anunlocked phone [xda-developers.com] that is quad band that isn't being carried by AT&T and you should be able to keep on using it.

I just got iphone 3gs from my friend who upgraded his to 4s.
I am using 3gs as I touch now.
My question is can my friend put his sim card back into this 3gs and call to unlock .
Once unlocked can he put his sim card back to his new phone and I get an unlocked phone
Thanks
you should be able to call AT&T with your account to unlock the 3GS once its unlocked you can use it with whatever carrier you like.

This is awesome, I was trying to unlock an old 3g for one of the kiddos the other day and just couldn't bring myself to upgrading the baseband to 6.15, now I just have to be patient and see how this unfolds.

FML, I just BB on my 3GS to 6.15....
