The same reason why you can still wear a shoe that is a tad bigger but not the one that is a tad smaller.

But this is an iPad case, not a shoe. If it's a tad bigger the iPad would fall out, there's no laces to tie it down.

The new iPad is very slightly thicker than the iPad 2. Less than a mm, so most cases that fit one will fit the other. But, if you're going to shell out $500+ for a new iPad, you might as well spend an extra few bucks to get a case that fits better.

The hard cases are nice, but tend to get small cracks in the corners if you remove/reinstall the case multiple times (i.e. if you want to use it with a stand). Bought a TPU case recently (flexible/soft plastic) - quite happy with it - fits perfectly and actually covers more surface area than my previous hard case did for the iPad 2.

Random note to all - you can get the soft case (and the hard case as well I believe) on eBay for about the same price with more color choices. Ships from CA - took me 3 days to receive. You can also get a 3rd party Smart Cover for ~ $10 that works and looks exactly like the OEM Smart Cover (you would not be able to tell the difference when looking at it).

You are comparing 0.03" difference, seriously?

Yes. Seriously. It's a .6 mm difference. As I said. Most iPad 2 cases should fit the new iPad and vice versa, particularly portfolio style or flexible cases. However for form fitting hard cases, LIKE THE ONE POSTED BY THE OP, .6 mm can make a difference.

I made this post in reference to canonikon's posting of a cheaper snap-on case for the iPad 2. As I already said, if you're going to plop down over $500 for a new iPad anyway, why on on earth wouldn't you pay just a few bucks more for a case designed to fit the dimensions of the new iPad?

Now, do you have anything to add to the conversation, or are you just hear to troll?

I'll add something, I have one of these, it fits perfectly on the new iPad...
