In my experience the hard shells for iPad/iPods scratch the back face of the machine. IMO the soft shell is better for dropping, since it would dissipate the impact better than a hard case. If you feel strongly for one or the other you can't really go "wrong".

The hard cases are nice, but tend to get small cracks in the corners if you remove/reinstall the case multiple times (i.e. if you want to use it with a stand). Bought a TPU case recently (flexible/soft plastic) - quite happy with it - fits perfectly and actually covers more surface area than my previous hard case did for the iPad 2.

Random note to all - you can get the soft case (and the hard case as well I believe) on eBay for about the same price with more color choices. Ships from CA - took me 3 days to receive. You can also get a 3rd party Smart Cover for ~ $10 that works and looks exactly like the OEM Smart Cover (you would not be able to tell the difference when looking at it).

Before you run out and buy a 3rd party cover please note that in order to have compatibility with sleep function on the New iPad (iPad 3) it must have the right polarity on the sleep magnet located on the outer most part of the cover. This is not an issue for the iPad 2.
