High school girl paints mural of a boy growing up into adulthood and it gets censored - VIDEO

The mural is inappropriate because it discourages lesbianism...which might be a viable alternative to many young women in this nation.

Yes, it's an overreaction. It is clearly not intended to encompass the totality of life experiences everyone may have - an no mural possibly could. I agree that the mural should be allowed to stay as it is. But I imagine such censorship is far more common in the opposite direction.

There might be some details missing......but I say this is BS and I do not see anything wrong with her drawing.

Now say an adopted child of two gay married men does a similar drawing but ending with the child growing up marrying another man and adopting a child.

Who among our posters here would object to that one?

i would. but not for the reasons you think. You will probably think that i am a homophobe, but that is not the case. I also think its OK to drink beer, have sex, play violent video games... etc. etc. but also think those things should not be on a mural at school. I have no problem with homosexuality. in fact, I agree with gay marriage, but I dont think a mural is the place to "promote" alternative lifestyles.

Hmm. How about a similar mural, ending with man, wife, and child but the wife is veiled in traditional Muslim garb. Ok with you?

Let's make something clear before we go much further: we are talking what should be allowed and what not. Right? We are not talking about what is merely your preferences. Right?

I am not talking legally. i guess i am talking about what i would want at my child's school. nothing more or less.

no, all forms a discrimination based on sex, race, religion, or sexual orientation should be illegal. (that is not meant to be entirely inclusive, just a minimum IMHO).

Hmm. So if the principal of the PUBLIC SCHOOL of your kids took down a mural showing two dads and a kid, you will support his right to do that or you would think what he has done was illegal?

As to your last question, that is a different topic. But here: AA in favor of X and "against" Y is ok with me.

that would not be illegal IMHO (but I am no expert, just saying i do not hink it should be illegal). Discrimination laws are to protect people, not paintings. I would support that the painting of a gay couple not be created in the first place. you are correct. Again, I support gay marriage. But that is for people over 17 and has nothing to do with school.

well sure it is and its not a different topic at all. you are in favor of promoting homosexuality and homosexual people ("X"), even at the expense of "Y" (straights in this discussion). on one hand you want equal rights (wall murals) and on the other, special rights (affirmative action like laws). well, big surprise, regular every day people are not going to buy into that.

Protection of people includes protection of their rights.

Consider a district where there is 25% Muslims and 10% Jewish. The principal who is a Muslim himself says he has to bring down a mural depicting a Jewish family because many of the parents are objecting. Ok with you? You think the action is not illegal?

they should have left it.. and then asked another kid to re-paint it 3 years later once she was gone from the school if they really didn't like it.. seriously, she showed sketches to the principal, and if it offended someone, then they could be offered the opportunity to paint their own mural somewhere in the school to express their views

well, you are changing the subject now to religion and that is a bit different. public schools may not have the right to put up religious symbols, as that may be "promoting" a religion. So, i would say probably a no-no. BTWm i am not advocating that they put up christian symbols either. in the OP, i see no religous symbols, that family could easily be athiest.
