This ordeal is like a fire tempering a sword. It's making chewy even tougher. If he got leprosy and his arm fell off, he'd beat the shit out of a bear, dip his stump in lemon juice and sew it back on with his good hand.
The last few weeks he has been retching very frequently, occasionally vomiting as well. We think it spread to his bladder as he has frequently been incontinent.
At one point he quit eating for a few days, then suddenly perked back up. He's been somewhat vital for a few days, but last night his lungs filled with fluid and his breathing became very labored. I essentially made up my mind last night that we'd take him to the vet today to end his pain.
We spent the morning with him, loving on him, and feeding him popcorn (one of the few things he'd eat toward the end).
When we took him to the vet, it became really hard because he was actually quite perky and happy. When the vet heard him breathing, though, she mentioned that breathing like that had to be painful, and when we asked if there was anything else we could do she said very little, and that once they get fluid like this in their lungs the end is not far off.
They took him back to put a catheter in his leg, then brought him back to us. My wife and I loved on him some more and when the vet came back we gave her the go-ahead to administer the drugs.
He went fast at that point. I cried me eyes out, and have been doing so pretty much all day.
