I purchased a refurbished Ooma (the newer one) almost a year ago. I then purchased the WiFi dongle for it as soon as it came out a few months ago. For $3.49/month, perfect sounding conversations, US long distance (Hawaii & Alaska) included, being able to work with my DECT 6.0 Uniden handsets scattered around the house and being able to port my number from my old telephone company, this was a fantastic buy for $130 refurbished. If you can get it new for $150, that's fantastic!

I'd rather pay a $150 up-front cost and $3.50 in fees/taxes per month than what I used to pay ($33/month, local calls only - what a horrible rip-off by my old telephone company!)

I missed the deal since I purchased it last month but hopefully this helps others

Have found the out-of-the-box quality to be good with occasional stutter which hopefully goes away when I find the time to tweak and customize the configuration. Have used it extensively to call US and international numbers and it works fine. Setup was simple and took about five minutes.

If you sign up for the one year premier package (which I did today), you get to choose from a number of different freebies:
(a) Free Blue Tooth Adapter (do not need it, Costco bundle has it included)

Wished they threw in their handset as a freebie for use with switching between phone lines - have not yet figured how to do it with my normal Panasonic wireless phone. A tip for those interested - price listed on Ooma website is $120 for one year premier service. Call their Customer Support and they will give it for $100....saves you $20...not sure if this is always the case but it worked for me.

Costco for $10 more is the better option for me given their 'satisfaction guaranteed or return and get refund' policies. I know this option is not available for all but for those who can, it is better, IMO. Note Costco charges taxes but shipping is included. Not sure if Ooma charges taxes.

The fees/taxes is based on location (I remember some one said their fee/taxes almost $5 a month). And based on how they increase fee every year, may catch up with other VoIP services soon or later.

May want to get Obi and use free google voice.

No point in scaring people with conjecture that is unfounded. If you are going to do that you might as well mention Google may start charging for google voice in 2013.

Well, the fact is Ooma used to be no fee. Then $11~$12 a year, follow by $3 something a month, and now they charge local fee and some people now pay almost $5 a month (depend on location). In their term and condition, they said they can increase fee anytime and they did (from $11~$12 a year to $3 something a month and keep going)
While for google voice, there is no changes yet. And the Obi devices work with many Voip services so can switch to use other low cost Voip easily.

I received a notice that my fees may increase after November (2011) depending on my location.


My fees did not increase at all. Average increase for most people on the Ooma forums was about 2 cents after the new fee & tax change, IF their fees changed. Most people on the forums saw that their area's fees did not increase.

there is also the same taxes and fees from phone companies anyways.

only problem is you have to rely on your internet connection, and we all know how good those are here in the US...

What kind of connection do you have? We have one in Honduras and the quality is fine only issue is the power goes out there all the time. Also my brother has on in Chile and it's fine as well. I'm sure your internet is better than what is being offered in those two countries.

Also if you allow it to be your router so it goes from your modem to ooma and then ooma to network or to router it will carve out 384kbs with QOS so you wouldn't be able to saturate your calls.
