ATT Saying I Need a 4G Data Plan... wtf

I just switched phones with the GF, gave her my iPhone 4 and got her Samsung Captivate. About a day after switching the sim cards out ATT is now sending me messages that I need a 4G data plan. I was on unlimited 3G grandfathered and quite frankly the 4G sucks, it's really no better than 3G where I am. So what's the deal, will they eventually shut me off, try to charge me, etc? Can I just tell them to throttle my phone to 3G speeds? Anyone deal with this crap before?

Just call them--my brother recently went from an old Blackberry to the Atrix 2 (which is 4G), and they just changed his plan from unlimited 3G to 4G.

Thanks prozac. I might just let it slide for another week or two, see what they do, before I breakdown and call.

Why not just call now before they switch you and you maybe lose your unlimited?

You may risk losing your unlimited data plan. It's nothing major. It's just the fact that at&t provisions iPhones and other smartphones differently. You'll just be moved from an iPhone unlimited plan to a Smartphone unlimited 4G plan.

They may shut my data off, but I'm not going to lose my unlimited plan. I'll call them when I have time this week.

They won't shut your data off. They will just switch your plan. You have to understand bubba..at&t is the most deceptive cell phone company out of them all. They are constantly trying to screw people out of their data plans.

They were automatically switching unlimited iPhone data plan users to the 4GB tethering plan if they were caught tethering.

I thought the Samsung Captivate was not 4G capable? I wonder why they are sending you those messages.

Yep, I got that message and I rarely ever go over 2GB/month. And they are the anti-christ. That being said, they probably would do some sheisty thing like switch me but in the end I just bitch at them and they fix it for me. Never had a problem with them fixing things after the fact, could be that I'm an ass on the phone or that I've been a business customer for over a decade, don't know.

Ohhh, okay. How is that phone anyway? I have the captivate and love it. Does the glide just add a keyboard?

AFAIK it just has an updated processor and keyboard. The GF got it two months ago and knowing that she was going to eventually switch with me I told her to get the Galaxy Nexus but she was insistent on the slide keyboard. By the time she knew she was going to switch I tried to go return it for the Note but it was just outside the 30 day window.

So far it's ok. It's running 2.3.6 so I'm not a big fan. Supposedly they are releasing ICS in the next month or two. Apparently there's no way to root it and no CM9 alpha either. I just use swype so the keyboard is useless to me. The display is nice, but resolution wise it seems to be a bit lower than the iPhone 4, I find myself having to zoom in on text more often. Otherwise, no real complaints.

Ew. I don't like it already . Captivate has a hugely active developer base. I have ICS on mine already

Yeah I have ICS on my touchpad and it's night and day vs 2.3. I guess I'll just have to wait until an official release.
