Thanks for the info, it looks like this is what I'll have to do. There's only two things about this I don't like too much. These active adapters usually don't perform as well causing a lower refresh rate. Playing games will probably have some draw backs. Additionally, I have two of these 30" monitors. Looks like I can only hook one up, maybe I can use some sort of hdmi splitter? My laptop has 560m, so it should be able to handle it.

There are displayport hubs that will split your displayport signal and let you hook up two of these. However, the hubs are over $100 so add that to the cost of getting two displayport to dual-link DVI converters.

Its the same reason as I mention in my first post. For most Windows Based laptops, you will need an Active Display Port to Dual-link DVI-D with the USB power. We tried using a normal active display port to just DVI device and it wouldn't work. It would only give a low resolution. When we used the USB powered Active display port adapter with Dual-link DVI-D, it worked fine. If you have one of those, and it still doesn't work...then I'm not really sure why.

There is probably a lower refresh rate, I haven't looked too deeply into that. The client was using solid works on his laptop, and it didn't seem like there was any tearing and refresh problem, but that's not exactly the same as gaming.

Apparently, this user made a custom resolution in the Nvidia console and force a higher display resolution 2560x1600 @ 35Hz via a HDMI to female DVI-D connector. You could try 60hz, but apparently it can crash on restart. But it might be worth a shot if you want to use both 30" displays.

I've bought several of these refurbs (24" ones) and they are genuinely Dell Factory refurbished. All the ones i've received look almost new. I had 1 issue with a monitor (virticle lines) and they sent a prepaid return label and gave a full refund.

My laptop doesn't have Display Port.

Any idea if I could use an hdmi to display port adapter, and then use the active display port to dvi adapter?

How long did it take until they were significantly diminished, or were they still usable? The 3007 is 400 nits and the 3007 HC version is 300 nits. So if the 3007 loses 25% brightness it doesn't seem like much of an issue since the brightness even at this reduced capacity would still be equivalent to the HC model new out of the box.

Dell refurbished monitors are promising as with their warranty, but I think DFS monitors are probably used more as they were leased. Who really takes care of their company monitors?

They were running everyday for about 2-3 years, then people started complaining about their screens getting darker. This happens at some point with every monitor, but if you want to have a longer lasting monitor, then it's probably the best to buy it new.

Just chiming in to give a little more info since I see people are concerned about the lifespan of this monitor. This monitor (like almost all of the dells from that time period) is susceptible to developing vertical lines of dead pixels. They appear intermittently at first then are here to stay. The lines are a single row of dead pixels that go from the top to the bottom of the screen. I had one develop on my 3007 wfp, my mother had one on her 24" at work. My monitor developed this line at around 3 years old. Dells site showed incorrect warranty information so I kept the monitor for around 8 months in this condition when I realized I still had extended warranty left. During this time I became used to the line (kind of like the old sony trinitron tubes that have two horizontal wire lines in them, even tho they are there your mind starts to block it out) Dell did replace the monitor with a u3011, I originally paid around $1200 for the 3007wfp w/ 5 year warranty from a slickdeal. Even though I said I got used to the line, dont get me wrong, it is very visible(changes from BRIGHT red to light green/blue depending on background) It is supposedly the soldering of the LCD matrix failing, and if you are out of warranty Dell WILL NOT touch the monitor, you have to find a repair facility yourself etc. I am on my FOURTH monitor, I went through two 3007wfp (first failed pwr button, second vertical line issue). Number 3 a U3011 that had crazy artifacting and scrambled screen issues, and finally number 4 which is beautiful, but the memory card reader doesnt work. I will live with that problem for now just to keep a working monitor. For anyone who does purchase the monitor I would probably not use the power button after the 100 day warranty is up, it will auto turn off when there is no video source.

Just wondering, this might sound like a stupid question but did they then adjust the brightness higher when it lost some of the brightness and was it still not bright enough? The reason I ask is every monitor I have ever used is way too bright at the highest setting for my eyes. The monitor I have right now is 5 years old and I have the brightness set at 43 out of 100 and it's bright enough for me at that relatively low setting even after 5 years. If I turn my 5 year old monitor up much past 60 it's like in torch mode.

Or turn it on/off with a power strip. Your thought is a good one because my five year old monitor is getting temperamental with the power on/off button. I think I'll start using a power strip with my monitors.

Not sure but I can tell you all the Dells leased at my work office never turn off. Shoot, I never turn off my computer or monitor, so it gets a good ~26000 hours of on time Good luck to the person who buys that off the refurb leased Dell stuff...

I guess it depends where the monitors came from. All of our monitors at work turn off when the computers are shut down for the night so they are on maybe 8 hours a day max and the monitors power off when someone walks away and is not actively using it. So at my company I'd say that's definitely less than 2,000 hours a year with weekends and holidays and vacation time that people take and the auto shutoff feature. I also think many companies have tended to be more cost conscious the past few years in terms of leaving unneeded equipment on 24/7 and how it affects their electric bill. Most large companies should be configuring all the company computers to turn the monitor off after a certain period of time when the computer is not being actively used.
