How odd is this?

I purchased something(digitally) online and i got this email...

Quote : We require additional verification to proceed with the order, as our automated system flagged the order as potentially fraudulent. Can you please reply to this email, confirming 1. your current location 2. your billing address (registered with Paypal) 3. a scanned copy (or photo) of some legal ID showing the same name that is associated with the Paypal account. We apologise for the inconvenience, but this action is necessary to protect all our customers from fraud.

Do u guys think this is a fraud within?

It depends. Was the message sent from the vendor or from PayPal itself? Was the digital item expensive?

not from paypal, from the vendor. I used paypal guest checkout so i can use credit card incase anything happened. Already spoke with the bank. item was $14.99. It was for an unlock code for a phone.

I have no idea if it is a legitimate request or not. I do know I wouldn't send anyone a copy of my ID for a $15.00 item. If it were me, I'd cancel the transaction.

Not worth the potential trouble for a $15 item.

I use paypal all the time.....I have never reveived any message like that. I'm not not saying that it's not legit but it sounds very strange. I would not reply with any of that info. I would report that to paypal asap. They should know if it's legit.

PayPal required the same info. (scanned driver's license) to them when they locked my account a couple years ago to confirm my identity and unlock it (I had called them to asked why it was locked and this is what they required. They Never sent an email requesting this. They wanted me to fax the ID).

It sounds like that's all the info one would need to change an account password with PayPal because you called them up and you are locked out of your email and "forgot" your password, because they don't use SSNs (at least my account is old enough that I have never had to give it to them), so there's not much else they can do to confirm your identity.

Dont do it they are trying to steal your WOW account!

But it sounds like a scam. Paypal should be contacting you not the vendor.

Sir, I only deal with official persons who are registered under the authority of the Bank of Nigeria. You are clearly a fraud for not having that affiliation. Good day.

I cant believe you're treating a nigerian prince(ss) like that.

Call the company and find out why they sent it. If they say sent it, then tell them you are cancelling your transaction protect yourself.

Update: They closed my case from their website and didnt send me an unlock code.

Called Paypal, they thought it was very strange that the vendor will ask for my ID, I asked to dispute it so the case is opened.

Recieved an email from vendor saying im being refunded through my claims. I have a feeling im not gonna get my full $15. oh well.

EDIT: paypal confirmed, im getting a refund. That only took 15 mins... LOL...
