Windows XP License
I have a computer that's pretty much done. I think the mobo is fried so that being said I want to replace pretty much everything. I have a windows XP install disc, can I use the serial key that is on my computer right now with the new parts or is that considered some type of fraud. The computer is an old compaq (maybe 6 years old). Roughly I think the only thing I'm going to keep is the DVD drive since it's sata, I'm planning on changing the mobo, hard drive, memory, processor and power supply. And of course a new OS.

Most likely you'll have to call microsoft to activate your windows. Just tell them your MB died and you're replacing it. They might just activate it for you since XP is old and they probably don't care about it any longer, but they might try to push you towards buying a new OS by not letting you activate your old XP. XP is almost out of life cycle now as it is.

Won't he have to install from an OEM disk to make his OEM key, work? A retail disk won't work I think.
Post #2 is correct license wise. Honestly I would buy windows 7. XP was a great OS, but its really not anymore. It still has quite a few security problems, it wont be receiving updates here in less than a year. It lacks much of the security of 7. Also your new machine will probably have a minimum of 4gb of ram, so your old 32bit XP (assuming) wont be able to use all of it. Yes buying 7 will cost some money, but you will can buy the OEM version with no trouble and its worth it. Vague questions receive vague answers . . . . . .

IF the license came with your computer (Compaq OEM), then posts 2, 5, 6 and 7 are correct.
IF you have a retail license that you bought separately from the computer, then posts 3 & 4 are correct. XP will be completely EOL (End Of Life) on April 8th, 2014. |
