Put DDWRT on it. To get 300 Mbps speeds I had to switch the wireless encryption to WPA2 with aes, and make the channel width 40 instead of 20.
Must also use ch 1 (lower) 6 (upper or lower) or 11 (upper) for full speed

Tut. on how to add an FTP server

Steps (after you flash to newest build)
(1) format drive you want to use to ex3 (use gParted) the whole drive is fine, you do not need all the dif. partitions
(2) select services, the usb, and enable all but printer and set to /mnt
(3) In the next tab over (nas) enable port 21 /mnt then select disable & disable
(4) turn off router (pull the plug)
(5) put drive in router
(6) plug back in / reboot router

go to filezilla, login and you should be good to go :-)
the user/password is the same as your router

Optional (if you want to access via internet) add
(7) Administation, commands...

iptables -t nat -I PREROUTING -p tcp -d $(nvram get wan_ipaddr) --dport 21 -j DNAT --to 192.168.1.1:21
iptables -I INPUT -p tcp -d 192.168.1.1 --dport 21 -j logaccept

save firewall

reboot, and all is good

Just yesterday I was trying to use one as a repeater and it was horrible. Wont give IP address to a wired device and even if it did it wasnt able to resolve DNS and so on. Also the USB port wont accept ntfs drive and the downloading software is a joke. This product was just dissapointing.

Anyone using DD-WRT can care to comment on their experience ?

I had exactly the same problem with the repeater mode. It looks like their most recent version of firmware is a little buggy. After I downgraded the firmware to a previous version, the problem has been fully resolved. Now my router works perfectly as a repeater.

my experience with this router was not the best.... signal dropped out probably once or twice a day, and yes, i tried dd-wrt and the same thing still happened.
great features for the price, but i cannot deal with dropouts
also, started failing big time after less than 1 year. i dont know if it was an overheating issue or something, but if i was running it, then unplugged it, i could not plug it back in again without waiting for 30minute to 1 hour.

I didn't find the repeater mode stable over extended periods. But if you install DD-WRT and repeat through that, it's been rock solid. I have a higher end Linksys as the main router and two Asus (DD-WRT) routers as repeaters. Haven't had to think about them at all.

I got in on this deal last time. Running DD-WRT and all seems fine. Boosted the power a little to extend the range and have had no overheating issues or lockups of any kind. I'm planning to do an external antenna mod as well with the exact items listed in the wiki (I have the pigtails, but I'm waiting on the antennas). One thing I would warn about specific to the external antenna mod is this unit has a molded plastic base forcing it to stand vertically. This may cause problems with the antenna spacing and orientation, which does matter. If I can't work out good spacing in the vertical orientation, I'm planning to dremel the base off and lay the unit horizontal.

In for 1 more (with no intention of modding) for my mother-in-law's network.

A repeater won't give out an IP address. And based on your post, you want a wireless bridge, correct? Basically you are trying to use the router to connect wired devices to a wireless network? If so, you must set it up in a wireless client mode to do what you want.

I haven't used DD-WRT, but I have set this up on multiple routers.

1) Make sure to set the router to "wireless client" or "infrastructure station" mode.
2) If their is a setting for it, make sure you have "static routing" set.
3) Also, make sure to turn DHCP off.
4) Set the SSID and password to match that of your wireless network.

Once you do all of the above, you will no longer be able to access your router. To do so, you will need to "reset" the router to its default settings.

EDIT:
Some routers (netgear) will take care of #1, #2 & #3 by changing your DHCP setting to "DHCP Client".

EDIT2:
After looking at the demo, there doesn't seem to be a "clean" way to set up wireless client. In fact, it seems it only supports this in "repeater" mode, which restricts a lot of options, and results in a drastic performance hit, because the device is acting as a repeater AND wireless client. DD-WRT may be the only option for a viable wireless client mode.

I got the B1 version recently (it supports 3G wireless dongle) and installed it in Chennai(India) with 3G broadband. It worked flawlessly.

The set up was a little confusing first since there were no clear instructions - but managed after a couple of tries..
