True, but these chips can easily hit 3.8-4.0GHz with only a 10% bump in Vcore. Slap on an $18 Cooler Master Hyper 212 CPU cooler or equivalent and the performance will be on par with an i5 CPU running at 3.1-3.2GHz. The bottleneck will be the speed of the hard drive and the GPU.

There is no need to spend more $ on an Intel CPU unless you encode video for a living.

These OEM chips at MC tend to have bent pins. Just make sure to test the pins with a board prior to purchase.

Dang it, broke down and bought a Athlon II X3 455 used for a little more than this on eBay. Should've kept waiting. I thought the Tustin CA location will never restock.

Is it true that this chip is better than 840 because of L2 cache?

If it came with a MB, it would be slick like last time. It's still slick, but just not AS slick.

Yeah, the 960t is $90 with a mobo. That seems like a much better deal.

Uhhh yes? The 830 actually has 6MB of L3 cache, whereas the 840 has none (the 840 is really an Athlon II X4). Although keep in mind that not every application takes advantage of L3 cache, and the stock speeds of the 840 is .4GHz faster.

That said, I've built two systems with the 840 and one with the 830 and LOVE the 830 way more. I was able to get a higher OC with the 830 than the two 840's, even though the ladder has stock fast stock clock speeds.

As someone else mentioned though, the 960T is only $90 with a free Gigabyte motherboard that is actually very good for a 760G mATX board. It has a 4+1 power phase, which provides safer and more stable OC ability then most other "low end" mATX boards. It also has the 710 SB so you can potentially unlock the 960T to a hexa core.

That has not been the case for months now. 4+1 power phase was on the old 3.1 revision Gigabyte 78LMT-S2P boards but since then the stores have stocked the 4.0 version (and starting to get the 5.0 version even) that only have a 3+1 power phase and support procs up to 95W.

Seriously bad and dangerous advice you're dishing out.

Seriously, lol. If you get the 960T for unlocking, at least get the Asus M5A78L-MT LX or whatever board, that supports up to 125w, but the GA970A-UD3 would be far better.

Also 830 is not in stock...I would have picked one up

I'm putting Micro Center website to my sh!t list. Been trying to order for the last 30 minutes, and ran into all sort of problems. Finally called the 800 number and the rep said the IT team is aware that the website is having technical difficulties.

Saw the stock went from 3 to out of stock for the Tustin CA location. Missed the boat for a 3rd time with the Phenom II 830.

Well, believe it or not, that 3.1 version board was actually really good and it's sad that Gigabyte cheaped out with the later revisions. I had a 1055T overclocked from 2.8GHZ to 3.4GHz on stock cooling, to 3.7GHz with a Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus. Keep in mind the 1055T is not a Black Edition processor and can only be overclocked by increasing the reference clock. I cranked that thing up to 264MHz and that board was completely fine, the system completely stable!

I upgraded from a X840 to this X830 and notice it is a bit more responsive and overclocks higher. OC topped at 3.8 but stable at 3.6.
