My single piece edition is only 4499x L.A. No "U.S.A. Pat Pend" wordings. |

Those are the U.S.A. ratchets, I would keep them. |

Where can I find reviews testing the strength and internal mechanisms testing USA made vs. Chinese? I looked around Google and found no solid proof of flaws or scientific evidence of anything just some bias people bashing around? I have a ton of older Craftsman tools and a lot of Kobalt / Harbor Freight and to be honest I've broken more USA made tools then anything from other countries thus far (past 10-15 years)...
Honestly I've noticed even the USA made Craftsman has gone far downhill in the past few years when it comes to overall finishing. My new set of Craftsman Ratchets I got today are Chinese and I put them up next to my misc. Kobalt/older tools and they seem to be pretty decent. Again I'm no pro I just do lots of work on my cars and house work. |

There is probably no solid proof, but the US retailers are so greedy that the Chinese factories are forced to use low quality materials to make lower-end products so that they can survive. This is also unfortunate for us consumers as well because we are the ones buying those cheap junks. Higher end products are probably okay.

As far as materials go, to my understanding a majority of the metal used in China is in fact imported from refined metals (recycled stuff / scrap metals) in the United States (data might have changed but from 2007ish this was true)? So I see my 'Chinese' tools the same as anything made in the 'United States' since shoot companies here most likely use a lot of refined stuff from smelted down Volvos. Unless there is tests to proof the tensile or shear strength of an inferior product? I'm no Engineer but this topic has just interested me for a while now.
Anyways I love my Craftsman, have had no problem with my Kobalt/Harbor Freight all the same. With the no-question asked lifetime warranty its all worth it too me. |

Took my 8 year old son over to get him some tools. We are into BMX bikes and I got him a 9 piece combo (full polish) wrench set, an extra 19mm combo wrench, a couple of screw drivers, and found a 13 piece ratchet set on clearance. Picked up the $4 bag... oh, and a Hex wrench set (folding). All the basic tools he'll need to start working on his bike. When we got home, I had him remove his front wheel (ended up repacking the bearings) and changed out his seat post. It was fun to see him using his tools, and I am hoping he'll take great care of them and have them forever.
