2000 watt Portable Generator $139 free shipping @ Home Depot

Home Depot has a $40 discount on the Sportsman 2000 watt (1500 continuous watt) portable generator. It has good reviews and is much more portable than most generators of that capacity. Regular price is $189 + online discount of - $40 and use promo APRILHD (must be in caps) for another -$10 making the final price $139 with free shipping!

According to multiple reviews, it should be enough to power the basics during an emergency such as a fridge, sump pump and a couple of lights.

There seems to be some confusion as to what wattage you need to run certain items. One post claimed this unit is insufficient for a fridge which is completely wrong. As a couple of posts have stated, it is probably not a good idea to run sensitive electronics on this machine (TV's, PC's, etc). The main purpose for this generator is for emergency backups, camping and to run tools.

Failure. Most new fridges run 150-200watts, triple that at most during compressor startup for the higher amperage draw. Shoot even that 40 year old freezer I got rid of only ran at 275-300w.

Want to rethink that comment again ?

A 2k is basically a camp site generator or to run a tool in the field. If you're getting something to run 'the basics' at home when the power goes out, start looking at 3000-3500 peak.

And yes, I thought about it a lot.
