Laptop $299 BF 2009, HTPC/Desktop built 2007, added HD4670 in 2010, maybe $500 invested, 1.7TB total space and Dell GX-280 ($50) running WHS 2011 with 4TB of storage. How did you get to 10TB, that would be 8 drives x 2TB = 10TB 64GB is plenty of an HTPC and for a Desktop Boot drive. Installed and updated Windows 7 64-bit is about 35GB. At least when I first booted up this laptop, it has a 160GB drive, 13GB for the Recovery Partition, OS and had 100GB free. I have 2GB worth of programs on the HTPC and 980MB on the laptop. You can install all your programs on it. However the User folder is what will grow in size if you use My Documents, My Music, My Videos and use the default Recorded TV folder. I was able to move stuff around and got my HTPC OS drive down to 255GB free of 298GB = 43GB and still have a few things to move to other drives or the server. 64GB is a bit too small for a laptop with a recovery partition, I will agree but its still possible, I use a 250GB portable external drive for any media. I just need to go through my main folders to move or delete files I don't use often. I mostly browse the internet with the laptop, I just have to watch the downloads.... Using a small capacity SSD just takes some planning. Sure 120-128GB gives you a wider margin for error but at even $1 a GB is still more than I wanna spend currently for the HTPC. Great SD Deals:

I've spent about 3 days installing windows vista and updates on my new crucial m4 64gb ssd. I did notice a slight speed boost for start up and shutdown. Programs are slightly snappier, but nothing special. The problem is web browsing is really bad. Its like the m4 is stuttering and takes a while to load a web page. My laptop is an old Lenovo 3000 v100 (sata v1) i got about 6 years ago, so I guess its too old to benefit from this drive. I also didn't see any improvement in battery life so there's really no benefit from going ssd for me. Looks like I'm gonna return it back to staples. It was a slickdeal but I'll return due to buyer's remorse.

Amazon is not gonna price match this because a staples coupon is used. But i think its called submit a lower price for amazon.

Got mines for $60 including tax and paid $.65 for coupon..
Got on staples chat and the lady asked if she wanted me to have process the order and then she price match or if I want to order first then get back on chat and then have them adjust after I order online. Ordered online for $89 or so minus -$25 coupon ..then plus comes to $69 or so. Got back on chat and gave them my order number and the rep found it and said he was going to refund the difference of $9 back to my card... So all in all I got it for $60 after coupon and price match.. |

once i made that change, it was night and day difference with a m4 128g drive. |

A better investment would have been Windows 7, 2GB of Ram and THEN the SSD.... |

I agree 2GB of Ram would be my minimum nowadays also. even though 1 GB will work 2 is MUCH better. Ideally 4GB. |

Windows installation and boot ups stalled when my laptop was set to ACHI. I had to change to compatibility (IDE) in order for Windows Vista to finish installation. I returned the 64gb ssd yesterday. I switched back to my hitachi 320gb 7200 rpm hard drive and set back to ACHI, and everything is back to smooth sailing. Thanks for all the recommendations.
Note: I do have 2gb of Ram, but didn't want to install Windows 7. I have one Vista license and one Windows 7 license. I'd prefer to have the Windows 7 on the desktop for better productivity and compatibility. Last edited by caychanh30; 04-24-2012 at 05:47 AM.. |
