External 2 terabyte Hard drive NTFS or Fat32?
I have been doing searches on the net and I still cannot find a definitive answer. I have to external 2 terabyte hard drives and I use them to store my movie files and watch the movies. Which format NTFS or Fat32 puts less wear on the hard drives? If I use NTFS , yes I disable indexing, system restore and recycle bin on the hard drives. I presumed that using NTFS that since that was a newer format it would be more stable than Fat32. My files are less than 2 gig in size. I always wondered why the manufacturers sent the hard drives in Fat32 format. Also I am going to reformat some other hard drives, does anybody have an opinion that if I create GPT disks that that will give extra protection on the hard drives (in reference to corruption)? Thanks for your help. |

Gpt
OK, I will stick with NTFS, the reason I asked about GPT is that supposedly it has redundant table layout records so that if the original table layout is lost or corrupted, it can load a previous layout (safety).I know in searching the net that xp 32 bit does not support GPT but I use W7 so I think I will go for the added safety. Thanks everyone.

You should use NTFS on external drives that aren't removed regularly. There are a lot of NTFS enhancements that make it more secure and robust than FAT32. If you were removing the drive regularly or connecting it to a non Windows PC, I would go with exFAT.

Also, I've heard that the theoretical limit for an individual file is 4 GB under FAT32 filesystem, please correct me if I'm wrong! If that's the case, most DVD rips would be OK, and NTFS necessary only if ripping Blu-ray. Please remember to rep those who have helped you...

BluRay movies can vary in size, depending on which format they have been ripped into, as well, I have movies that are not BluRay, that exceed the 4 gig Fat32 limit. Last edited by RockySosua; 04-17-2012 at 01:49 PM.. |
