Teachers role in society is to educate children in reading, writing, math, science, and history. While social interaction at school is a benefit, the teachers do not have the privilege of teaching those lessons parents are responsible for. I do think teachers ought to be able to restrain children in emergencies, but not use corporal punishment. I would not be opposed to an "opt in" system where a parent sends a note and a legal waiver allowing corporal punishment to be used on their child (I would not opt in). Or they can send them to a private school with such policies (if they still exist). I just don't trust a teacher to follow the appropriate discretion with my child. I have slightly more faith in the government using discretion when applying their right to use force, though they have a history of making mistakes as well.

More concisely, my authority over my child supersedes other's (including teachers) authority over my child so long as I am neither abusive nor negligent.
