I use filtered water from the fridge, it definitely affects the taste vs city water.I would also add that grinding fresh whole beans makes for a better cup of coffee. My mom has a Keurig B60 and when she breaks out the Maxwell or Folgers I usually pass on a cup at her house.

I agree with everything you said here. If I had to buy just one it would be the B40. It has no screen and does seem simpler.

The normal B70 package does not contain the filter and 60 K-Cups that the Costco version comes with. I would normally go with the Costco B70 if Kohl's didn't have all of the discounts included in this deal.

I got the B40 at Kroger's for 50% off after christmas in their seasonal aisle and it works really well so far.

"Bold" cups seems pretty weak to me for the larger size, so I imagine the B70 with the bigger cups would seem even weaker, but I like my coffee strong. So if you like weak coffee, maybe the B70 might not be so bad.

Plus the B40 only has 3 buttons (off/on, small and large brew), so I'm sure there are less things to go wrong with it.

I added the reusable filter and the 48 cups variety pack with the B70 and it comes out to
$166.58. Which is @$17.00 more than costco, but you get 12 more cups at costco
Also you get $30 kohls cash on top of that, so pretty slick.

Costco in northern cali has it instore for $150.00, online its $160.00

To me its a toss up between kohls and costco. Sure Kohls i would get $30 in kohls cash, but after reading reviews on it, there were quite a few B70's that went out of service within a year, some after that and with costco you can bring it in with no problem. im not sure if kohls take it back after a year.

off topic here, but my friend lost this screw thingy on his propane grill (attachment that connects the tank to the grill) that he has been using for 4 years, He went to costco and they told him to bring it in and gave all his money back. That screw thing probably cost about $.10 cents or whatever.

my other friend upgraded flatscreen tv's there for about 3 years straight bringing it in getting all his money back and putting it towards a newer model. i heard up until recent that they stop letting you do that, but i just wanted to comment on how awesome and easy Costco's return policy is.

You can use as many as you want, you just have to start over and brew again. You are correct in that it does taste like water. That's because it's very overextracted weak coffee. On the brew chart that corresponds to bitter water. It's the main reason I tell people not to buy a Keurig and the like. If you increase the amount from 8 to 10 ounces you are only overextracting the coffee even more (bad thing) and adding more water. If you use a single cup brewer like a Black and Decker Cup at a Time (retail $20?) you can use the correct amount of coffee and it won't, however much you want, and it won't cost you $27/lb which is way over market price for the old low-grade coffee you get in Kcups.

My advice as a coffee geek is to avoid them. A Keurig (or any pod brewer) is a lot like an expensive car that doesn't actually drive that well, and requires special gas that costs 30% more than market prices and gets 30% less MPG. The difference is that everyone sees gas prices and knows what MPG should be with cars. No one thinks about their coffee except the millionaires from GMCR counting their coins.

I won some kcups but don't have a Keurig. I opened up a Barista Prima Columbian, top of the line kcup, cut the foil off and brewed the coffee (which should have been 7 ounces with the 13.3 grams I found inside, not 8-16. Guess what? The coffee was old an stale. How do I know? If you put 200 degree F water on fresh coffee it release tons of CO2. This kcup released diddly squat.

There is a common misconception that adding more coffee makes it stronger. Not necessarily. In the case of Kcups it is true, it makes it less bitter and less watery by adding more coffee...but if you tried this experiment outside of a Keurig it wouldn't work the same way. You'd be underextracting the coffee and making it sour by using too much coffee. Strength is a measure of extraction %. You want to get into a certain range. Most kcups, if not all, will leave you in the overextracted category. If you want weak coffee you should simply brew coffee properly and then add hot water, instead of messing the the coffee:water ratio.

You should be using filtered water anyway. Especially if your geographic area has hard water. You'll build up scale in the boiler in no time. That said, if you don't like the taste of Keurigs it's most likely not the fault of your water. There are many inputs into coffee brewing and the Keurig and Kcup system does about each one poorly. Old coffee, wrong temp, wrong ratios, too fast of a brew time, etc, etc. Go to a coffee industry conference and see if there's one person drinking from a Keurig!
