This has more processing power, but also uses more power (more expensive all around), so I guess it depends on what you're looking to do with this server.

It does support ECC. Came with 1 4 GB stick. Has 6 SATA port and if you remove the dvd drive will support 6 Hd's. Have dual NIC. Will support Xeon proc. A much better server than the HP. Will make a nice destop too. I installed Ubuntu server and windows 8 on it without the need to download any driver. A solid deal for$ 300.

You're right, looks like i3's come in several SKU's and the PCH determines whether it does or doesn't

This server will support more for sure, but it's also larger, more expensive and uses more power, so it really depends on what you need it for.

FYI, I've installed a whole host of OSes on the HP N40L server (including Windows 7, Windows 8, WHS, Windows Server 2008 R2, BSD, several flavors of Linux) and also never downloaded any drivers.

Seems no IPMI (Out of Band/iLo) on the NIC though ---- just from COM port

I actually really wanted to build and use an intel based All-in-one box to reduce power consumption, but to get ECC and VT-D, I would have to spend 350+ for just the mobo and CPU alone, even as a slickdealer. I bought instead a Asus M5A97 and a Phenom x6 1045T cost around $150 at MC and it supports both with 6 cores, plus 16GB of ECC Kingston ram, and a nice full tower case that can potentially hold 20 drives, totaling less than $350. Power consumption will suffer for sure.

I actually was also able to get the N40L from the insight deal a couple of weeks ago, which was an amazing deal, but I was planning to run more 6+ drives. Only if this Fujitsu had more drive bays. Could have sold the i3 and bought a Xeon E3 and would had ECC and VT-D and for around $400. but the number of drive bays, such is life.
