This is tempting. I'm hoping for the 7970 or 680 to drop around $400 before I take the plunged or "Big" Kepler finally comes out.

Overclock the two 6950s to their maximum and overclock this to its maximum and this will beat the Xfire setup. Not only does this generation overclock better, but the architecture scales better with overclocking. Overclocked 7970s already come close to/surpass 6990s in a fairly wide number of scenarios.

Not to mention lower power consumption, noise, heat, no microstutter or Xfire scaling problems, etc.

From every test I've seen the 6950's come out on top (minus the extra power consumption obviously and various driver issues), even more-so if you have modded 6950's to 6970's.

Not that I would go for a CFire setup or anything more powerful than a 6950 atm, I don't need it for anything I play at 1920x1080. Maybe if/when I upgrade to dual 27" 2560 x 1440 I'd need to upgrade.

That's because the tests you've seen haven't overclocked both to their relative maximums. These aren't available on the usual benchmark sites -- you'll have to scour hardware forums like OCN and hardforums to see the metrics. The 7K series is clocked very conservatively across the board, and Cayman had terrible scaling with clock speeds.

Choosing 2 6950s over this is just silly; this is even a better choice when it comes to performance once you take into account overclocking, smoothness and minimum framerates.

I agree with your last point. I finally settled on the $200 GTX 480 after having the GTX 580 first, GTX 590 second, and HD 6990 just before. I don't think people need more for 1080P, but for those people pushing pixels in multi-monitor and 1600P I think this card has plenty of value.

Stop all the good deals, I am waiting for the 670/660 to come before I upgrade from my 6950. For me all that matters is which card plays better @2560x1440 on Blizzards games(SC2 and Diablo 3).
I'll be building my Ivy rig on Monday with the release, I would hate to have to blow another $400+ on top of the $550 I am already planning on spending on Ivy mobo, new cpu block, and the cpu(3570K or 3770K, still unsure).

As someone who has tried to use crossfire throughout several generations, I can say that I hate it. Nothing is a gaming buzzkill like having your brand new game ready to go, and realizing you must either play with significant visual problems, or use only one of your GPUs because the dual GPU drivers aren't quite ready for prime time yet.

Waiting for driver fixes on newly released games was really the biggest problem for me. I didn't experience too much microstutter.

But driver issues with crossfire are not fun. Nvidia has problems too, but not like AMD. Both of their single GPU cards are almost always fine, but I am willing to pay extra to avoid dealing with SLI and Crossfire anymore.

I thought the official price of the 7970 went from $550 to $479? Then this is a good deal.
