if you have a hat that is dirty then you look like a disgusting slob who isn't concerned with hygeine or cleanliness.
not washing doesn't necessary equal visibly dirty.
until the last few months, the hat i wore daily for ~5 years didn't look dirty/ratty. of course, it helped that it was tan and i only wore it casually (i hate having a hat on when playing sports/hiking/etc.), so it's not like i sweat a lot in it. as a result, it stayed pretty clean. how else was it going to get visibly dirty? it's not like i'm going to spill food on it or have a puddle splash up on it.
the original post seemed to be more about shading the OP's face in everyday/casual wear than mopping up sweat while playing 7 on 7, and if that's the case, it's not going to get visibly dirty for a long time.
I just throw mine in the wash with my laundry. They come out a little shrunken but they stretch back out after a couple hours of wear. They do start to fade with washing, but I'm not trying to win a beauty contest, I'm trying to keep the sun and the cold and the rain off my head.
