Need Advice: Personal Finances & Investments 101 for Late-20's Male?
I'm an academic at heart with a desire to always learn and grow as a person. I'm newly enrolled in an M.B.A. program, have a good-paying office job compared to many of my peers who are 26-28 years old (my localized age bracket), and I just start lightly reading Suzie Orman's "The Money Book for the Young, Fabulous & Broke" [amazon.com] even though I'm not "broke." This book got me thinking about more complicated (and frankly, intimidating) financial topics such as Investment Vehicles.
I've never taken a Personal Finance 101 or an Investments course during college or was never taught any of this by my parents. The M.B.A. courses focus more on business operations rather than ways of handling one's own money.
If you were me, where would you begin to "learn" about how the stock market works (and how one can invest in stocks), various investment strategies (how a 401k works, how a Roth IRA works, Mutual Funds and why 1 fund is better than another, etc.)? Is there a Dummies-book or Website to all of this?
Here are a few proposed steps that I plan to take. What do you guys think?
My goal is NOT to become a financial whiz that can do high-end Statistical work. I'm merely looking for a down-to-earth, common-sense approach to learning everyday money investing...something that every adult should have a grasp on.

- I might try the HowTheMarketWorks.com [howthemarketworks.com] game. I'll invest fake money into the stockmarket to see how it performs throughout the next month, half-year, year, etc., just to get a better grasp of how my actions can impact my portfolio.
- I have a Financial Planner buddy that I lightly discuss these topics with, but I am the type of person who likes to have hands-on knowledge of how something works (instead of relying on other people).
