International hackers ran an online advertising scam to take control of infected computers around the world. In a highly unusual move, the FBI set up a safety net months ago using government computers to prevent Internet disruptions for those infected users. But that system will be shut down this summer.

The FBI is encouraging users to visit a website run by a security partner that will inform them whether they're infected -- and explain how to fix the problem. After July 9, infected users won't be able to connect to the Internet.

Sounds more like this post (that is, the original email you got) is the real "virus". This is the classic "the sky is falling and IBM has the solution" email whose point is to get as many people as possible to forward it. Just delete it from your inbox and stop forwarding and posting it.

There's a link from fbi.gov to dns-ok.us Not saying that makes it any more trustworthy than the usual website but it does have an outbound link nonetheless

Assuming that is *the* Paul Vixie, he is the author of BIND ((still?) one of the most popular DNS servers) and his name pops up in what seems like every internet RFC I've ever looked at.

I use his cron app every day (vixie-cron)

Their own tool is more difficult to use.

This title is misleading. Your ISP is not going offline, a virus might just be affecting your ability to do names lookups. The internet will still work and you never lost it, your computer is just not working properly.
