Many many laptops with higher end graphics cards will often skimp on the cooling systems for said graphics cards, resulting in driver failures and system failures when the video cards reach critical temperatures.

I had some friends whose laptops would consistently "black screen" after an hour or so of gaming if they had it on their lap or bed. They would have to keep it on a solid cool surface like a wood desk or use one of these.

Obviously the ideal thing is to avoid said laptops in the first place, but in case you'd rather spend $7 versus several hundred for a new one, this is a pretty good alternative.
