scientifically clearing my backlog ("a must read thread if there ever was one" - the new york times thread review) i'm working on isolating several factors that contribute to my decision to play a game, weighing them, then plugging them into an equation of my own devise that will determine what game comes next. so far, the factors i've determined that measure my interest are -- game length (the longer the game, the less inclined i am to play); game difficulty (generally speaking, the more difficult the game the less i want to play, though this is occasionally reversed for some games where the appeal is the difficulty); general public interest (as gauged by composite review score and user review scores); and my own interest (hard to pin down, this is the ultimate variable and will be worth the most weight). there are some other minor factors i need to account for, such as nostalgia factor (which may already be accounted for in my own interest rating), online factor (do i feel like playing an online intensive game or not?); trophy (or achievement) difficulty (do i feel like making an effort to unlock them all for this particular game?). many of the smaller factors have some overlap with my own personal interest measurement, so i'll either have to exclude those factors when i gauge my overall interest, or exclude them from the formula all together. anyway, this is a work in progress, and if anyone has any feedback or suggestions, let me know. Rumble, young man, rumble. These are interesting times we live in. Punctuation is key. Fruit is nature's candy.

For your "Personal" aspect...I'd put you on a 1 to 5 scale. You could rate everything 1 to 5...then come up with a multiplier to weight out each with how special they are to you... I'd do it all in Excel.

X = overall score (let's get this 1-10) h = hours d = difficulty p = personality x - higher more desirous group hours? 1-10; 11-25; 25-40 so on? longer the game the less i want to play; weight applied must be fractional more difficult the less i want to play certain exceptions like where the appeal of the game is the difficulty like dark souls fractional weight again for difficulty will apply modifier for the difficulty is the appeal personal bias will have highest weight x = (h*hw)*(d*dw)*(p*pw) + "other factors" nostalgia? online? public opinion? |

ideas:
length group weight 1-14 10 15-30 9 31-45 8 and so on, will play with these 22 hour game - group weight 9 1/22*9 = .4 difficulty shouldn't be simple weight, extremely easy aren't desirable either 5/10 = ideal difficulty weight lower further away from 5 if game's appeal lies in it's difficulty, then ...??? add other factor points at end |
