Options to watch TV without cable box

Gdog2004 206 April 24, 2012 at 11:57 AM in Tech & Electronics (3)
I have comcast cable. I have 3 cable boxes already and have no interest in adding a 4th.
I just bought a small LCD for my GYM area in my basement so we can watch tv while on the treadmill. This will be MAYBE 5-7 hours a month . To me I dont want to pay for another cable box. What are my options ? I would prefer to watch hulu or something but I know that too cost 7.99 a month.

With comcast if you have a qam tuner you can plug it in. You might get the 2-90 channels if they have not encrypted the non-local channels yet. But I warn you at some point they will encrypt all but the local channels.
But sadly the ClearQAM tuner versions of your local channels usually are 480p when an antenna can get 1080p.

Uh what?

On every cable service I've been a part of (charter/comcast/fios), ClearQAM channels (of the channels that were available OTA) were 720p or 1080i. I know theoretically it's possible that OTA broadcasts in 1080p but I don't know of any station that actually does -- they use 720p and 1080i as well afaik.

I guess I'm just lucky enough to be in an area where comacst likes to make their service extra special. I had a similar reaction when I first discovered this. Some of the channels are 720p or 1080i, but for me all of the local ota channels are 480p or 720p (more 480 than 720). Frankly even 720p is pathetic when you get get 1080p free OTA. I think one of the major networks was even missing form the ClearQAM channels (it's been a while since I checked).

Sadwalk

I'm talking about ClearQAM unscrambled content not QAM / Cable Card content

When I was on comcast, there was redundancy on the local networks and they were broadcast twice -- once in HD and once in SD. (There was a short period of time where it was actually broadcast thrice -- HD, SD, and analog SD.) IIRC, the virtual channels for the HD would always be low numbers like 5-1 or 7-1 but for SD would be high like 205-1.

And again -- I don't know of any US stations that broadcast in 1080p since they tend to save bandwidth for subchannels. OTA TV looks better than cable TV (as long as you have a good signal) because it's uncompressed.

Funny, but I would've gone with poking fun at the 5-7 hours of use/month that treadmill's getting.

Consider working out more than 5-7 hours a month and then the extra cable box will be more worth it.

EZ guys. 5-7 hours a month is for the TREADMILL. I do Crossfit training 5-6 days a week. The treadmill, when outside is not available (rain, too cold, too hot) is a nice alternative.
Treadmill is MAYBE 20 percent of the time I workout. How many of the people who responded with the smart ass comments (not the helpful ones, thank you all for those) work out AT ALL ?

Smart ass one reporting in:
3 times a week Spartacus workout (41 min). Try it ... promise it will kick your ass!
And if you do ... the Treadmill will be on Craigslist in 2 weeks.
5 1/2 mile run up on soft part of beach ... getting there by 4 1/2 mile bike ride each way. 2 times wk.

I printed this out on two pages: http://www.starz.com/SiteCollectionImages/Spartacus2009/downloads/MH_Spartacus_Workout.pdf

It's a great workout but it's pointless without the soundtrack, who's going to hold a stopwatch? Original site is down but you can still get S/T here: http://www.workoutmuse.com/blog/the-spartacus-2-0-workout-soundtrack click the second or third down - it loads as a zip file ... yes it's safe.

Just finished it and I'm shaking like a leaf ...
What kind cross training are you talking about?

I did the one your talking about for like 4-5 weeks. Then moved on to this one. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ee-REYcaT2A
Its harder. And I still cant do all 4 rounds but can eek out 3. Very leg heavy.
After 4-5 weeks I moved back to this one. Which I really really like. I do it way faster than it asks for and it seems to have a lot more upper body stuff which I like.

All of these workouts are loosely based on the principles of crossfit. www.crossfit.com --I have done that on and off for awhile.

Yup sounds like you're mixing it up which you should do to keep the body guessing.

I thot as a runner that the "mountain climber" would be easy but not so at all ... when a full 60 can be completed, it's time to move on! Oddly, this workout has helped the running ... seems I can not get puffed out at all unless in a full sprint.

All these circuit routines absolutely NEED the sound track or forget it ... yet most don't mention it?

I never used the soundtrack. I like my own music, I usually do this workout in my home gym with a buddy.
I have the laptop setup with this thing called online timer. which is just a big stopwatch. works for me.
Althoug if I were doing thi at a gym I would probably just use a stopwatch on my ipod

you can always scale these workouts to be as tough as you want. 60 seconds of mountain climbers obtainable ? try doing 70 seconds.
