ah... they're the sheen/shiney cotton/spandex 90's look material. PASS. bummer too as I'm looking for some truly fitted shirts... i cannot stand that outdated material and look. unless they come in more traditional material as well??

sorry... but still, ironing?? There is no price too high to avoid that. Both time I tried, it brought me to tears... god.. just thinking about it now... so inhumane~

Maybe not to you, but it is a good deal for people where the 1MX shirt is the only shirt that fit them well. It's not the lowest price I've seen but it is a good price at more then half off. Show me another brand that has the exact same fit as the 1MX with better quality material and I'm sure people with rep you for it. Otherwise, you're just thread crapping.

Which collar is more traditional and which is more modern?

Spread collar vs. point collar vs. button down collar?

I'm just wondering what that does to the total cost of the shirt. For instance, how many total times can you wear it and wash it at home before it has faded or aged? If it's only 10 times, then a $30 shirt costs $3 per wearing. If dry cleaning it for $2 means it could be worn 40 times, then it cost you $30 + $2 * 40 = $110 or $2.75 per wearing... about the same, and it's likely only worth dry cleaning (for longevity) on more expensive items. Of course, these numbers could be way off.

It's definitely an argument to spend more on good laundry detergent, if that makes a difference. You wouldn't want cheap detergent to shorten the useful life of your clothes.

Here are some fairly obvious and easy to obtain options, I'm sure others have great suggestions as well (by no means am I saying these are super high end, but they are significantly better than anything Express makes):

Calvin Klein can usually be around between $25-30 (on sale/clearance), otherwise more regular pricing is between $35-50. CK has non-iron on the majority of their classic shirts (solids and stripes), which is a god send. Slim fit is indicated on the label. Quality isn't fantastic, but it's miles better than the equivalent Express shirt.

HUGO BOSS - Boss Orange is all slim fit (it doesn't say it on the tag, but by design Boss Orange is all slim), Boss Black has slim and regular fit (indicated on the tag). These are pricey at regular prices, but can be found around $40-50 on sale or clearance at different times.

Saks label - I think the Red label stuff is the better fitting of the bunch. Again this will be around $50.

Brooks Brothers is hit and miss, they're okay but nothing special - but they do offer Slim and Super Slim fits as well as non-iron. Unfortunately these are also going to be $50-70 a piece, even on sale or clearance.

And if you're truly cheap, H&M has stylish and decent fitting clothes, but the quality isn't all that great (material is soft, build quality isn't any worse than Express though). Most everything in this store is $30-40 or under (except jackets/coats).


The best places to shop for these clothes is at Nordstrom Rack, Saks Outlet, Neimann Marcus Last Call, and then the individual outlet stores for these brands (HUGO BOSS, CK both have outlets). CK has coupons you can sign up for and a reward program, and CK clearance in store combined with coupons can net you some seriously cheap shirts and pants. Expect to pay up to $50 per shirt, even on sale/clearance, for a decent shirt - you'll be able to easily distinguish the quality in these stores compared to the stuff at Express. There's plenty of different designer brands at deep discounts, you'll just have to look for a tapered fit and then try them on. Once you find brands and sizing you like, you can start watching for online clearances.

A fall back option is always to buy shirts you like and fit okay but not great, and then have them tailored.

Haha I figured there would have to be an individual to pick up on that, however BMI is extremely flawed, no body fat % consideration. I'm under 10%...

Agree with everything this guy said (except the part where you can get decent Hugo Black shirts for $50...that's a steal, at least in Los Angeles).

I'm over 6'4", around 200 (think CrossFit, not skin-and-bones). And yeah, fit matters. Both sides of the argument are correct: Express shirts DO fit in-shape people really well, but yeah, they ARE kinda crap.

My personal favorite is the aforementioned Boss Black, slim fit. The problem is they're usually over $100. The styles/sizes at my [keep in mind, this is LA] Nordies rack aren't the best. Cladmen actually had some really screamin' deals before they went kaput. Wish I'd bought more.

The important thing isn't who's right and who's wrong here. The important thing is to make an informed decision. If this is your first foray in to nightclubs and business casual and button downs, by all means, get yourself a nice-fitting 1MX. Just know what you're getting into (it's poor quality material, it WILL wrinkle, and it probably won't last forever). But that doesn't mean there is no place for them.

Maybe on your birthday or special occasion, go in to a Nordies/Saks/Bloomies and see if you can find a brand that you like. Then set up an SD alert (for example, the Macy's 25% friends and family going on now) and see if you can pick one up on the cheap. Build your wardrobe slowly, when you can afford it.
