How to spend $5000 without actual spending?
1. Serve (paypal clone) can be funded with credit cards, fee free until june 1st 2012. So fund Serve acct with amex, and withdraw funds to your bank acct to pay off amex. http://www.serve.com/how-serve-works.html#fees. max $1000 a day, $2500 a month. ironically Serve is from american express inc.
2. Amazon Payments allows you to send money without fee up to 1k each month. Don't send money for each other.
3. Venmo.com will help you with the first $500 --> after this there is a 3% fee
4. Paypal Send money if you still need to spending. The fee is 0.30 +2.9%.
5. stock up some gift card that you'll use in the future
How to use the 50k membership rewards smartly?
1. wait for gift card promotion. AMEX offers 10-20% off gift card sometimes
2. wait for Delta or BA promotion which can turn 1 MR to 1.5 delta or BA miles. (Currently BA promotion is active!)
3. transfer/sell them to the people who need it. Rewards2Cash.com is one example that offers cash for MR at 1.22 cents/point. YMMV and practice at your own risk.
3. Shop at Amazon and pay with MR. It only values at 0.7 cent each point. (not so smart)
5. transfer to other airline miles that you need.

Any suggestions on how to spend the $5K without really spending it? I know a few years ago there was the deal with the US Mint where you could buy coins at face value and turn them back in at your bank, but I don't see that available now.

Search for Amazon Payments. There is a limit to what you can send per month, so you probably can't just flip the whole $5k, but it'll make a dent in it (for free). To my knowledge, there are no more places where you can simply charge large sums of money for no cost to you and collect it back again.

would there be a cash advance charge? when i am trying to load using serve, it says "Your issuer may impose a cash advance charge for loading your wallet from a credit card."

Travel rewards: You can transfer your points to airline and hotel loyalty programs, usually at the rate of 1 Membership Rewards Point to 1 airline mile or hotel point, for a valuation of 1 cent per point. Still, redemption rates vary by partner, so you’ll need to do the calculation for yourself. |
