In the Chicago Tribune it states "All the children in Akian's class have autism or other learning difficulties, making it difficult for them to communicate with other people." Which got me wondering why are they in school? What are they learning? Is what they learn or need to learn best leaned at home?

I find it hard to believe that a few previous posters find nothing wrong with a teacher calling any child a bastard, and treating them the way they were being treated. Maybe my opinion is biased because I do have a child with autism (who is thankfully very verbal) but dang, the boy in question was having issues at school and the staff blamed the boy. In the end, he was acting out because of how he was being treated. Kudos to the dad for getting it on tape. It's not being overblown, I think this story and many other similar stories from the last year or so are bringing some much needed attention to how society is treating those that are the most vulnerable. In this case, they have a wire. But when you choose slander as a method of punishment, all it takes is one student who doesn't like a teacher to accuse them of molestation to screw over a good teacher. It quickly turns into a guilty until proven innocent scenario. Even if the teacher is completely innocent, all it takes is one accusation to ruin their entire reputation. Many teachers who sit in those rooms playing cards are in just that situation -- they can't go teach because they've been accused of some horrific thing they didn't do. Could you imagine what would happen if workers could get their bosses canned (or moved) just by stating a lie about them? Again, the teacher hasn't been fired YET. Just like when someone commits a triple murder, they don't get sent to execution without a date in court first. I

There are ways to teach people who can't be taught "traditionally." That's why there's certification for special ed teaching. Most parents don't have this training, which is why most people think "oh, poor parent" when they see someone with a special ed child. The kids learn how to function in life -- social skills, communication (at some level), behavioral skills, etc -- as well as other "traditional" school things. Learning disabilities can just mean that you learn at a different pace, not that you can't learn at all. So someone who's HS age may be learning first or third grade material -- but it's still valuable learning. However, calling kids names, talking about your sexual exploitations, and verbally holding kids hostage is not what they teach you when you're getting special ed training. |
