I've taken my kids to some of these clinics over the past couple of years. It's definitely fun for the kiddos. Be prepared for the sound of 30 kids hammering like crazy & parents grumbling after they (not the kids) inevitably put some part on the wrong way & have to do some disassembly. Very, very loud. They often run out of aprons & goggles. No food or drinks, but the kids get the completed project, a patch to put on their apron, and a certificate of completion. The project & certificate usually end up in the trash within a week or so (unless you have the kid give it to a grandparent as a "handmade" present), but it's still worth it for the experience. Plus, it's free.

Home Depot [homedepot.com] does the same thing and my 5 year old absolutely LOVES it. Good bonding time with the youngin' and it only takes 15 minutes out of your shopping trip if you are there for something else anyway.
• FREE hands-on workshops designed for children ages 5 - 12 offered the 1st Saturday of every month at all The Home Depot stores between 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. • Workshops teach children do-it-yourself skills, tool safety and instill a sense of pride and accomplishment. • All kids get to keep their craft and receive a FREE Kids Workshop Apron, commemorative pin and certificate of achievement. |

We try to do both Home Depot and Lowes. The kids LOVE THEM! We did the Terrarium last Saturday and we got there at 9:30 and the wonderful girl let us go ahead and get started on it. We were out the door before anyone else even got there. But for us you HAVE to register because it fills up quick.
Plus, sometimes they will let you just pick up all the stuff (aprons, goggles, kit and patch) to take home and build instead. That's nice when dad can't make it or one of the kids is sick. |
