Nope nothing wrong with saving your money! Just think, you are getting a top line memory foam mattress for a fraction of what you'd pay at Tempur Pedic. Personally their overhead is their problem so I'd rather not pay thousands for the same quality and type of bed. A few reviews on Amazon of the Lucid and Sleep Innovations beds (IIRC) said they 'knew' their new bed wasn't as good of quality as Tempur Pedic but for the money they thought it was good enough. Well since getting mine I have since gone to Tempur Pedic to see how objective those reviewers were being and I don't see how my mattress is any lesser or lower quality than a comparable Tempur Pedic. In fact Dynasty Mattress guarantees their mattress is as good or better than the comparable style of Tempur Pedic mattress. That plus their 90-night in home money back trial gave me the confidence to buy my mattress through Amazon. Never would have thought of Amazon before but I'm so glad I googled memory foam mattresses and Amazon popped up in the top results. Saved me a couple thousand bucks (at least) and saved me haggling with some pushy salesperson concerned moar about their commission than my comfort.

I bet most of what they were judging the quality on came down to the mattress cover the manufacturer used. You know how you can go to a mattress/furniture store and check out several mattresses that are about the same firmness but a lot different in price? I found that comes down to the mattress upholstery like some special Damask cover that is costly but doesn't affect the comfort. The other thing I noticed was the added padding on some inner spring mattresses and that really inflated the price! Calling it 'Euro Plush Super Duper Comfort Top' just adds to the price. It's a gimmick to separate you from your cash. You can get the same result adding a memory foam topper if you want and you'll use a good mattress protector anyway so an expensive Damask upholstered cover makes even less sense.

Oh, those memory foam mattress toppers come in 4 inch thickness and maybe more. One of my sisters got a 4 inch one for her and her husband's king size inner spring mattress and they love it. They spent over $1800 on that mattress and still complained about comfort so I suggested a memory foam topper (this was about a year ago) and they got one. It solved the problems but that sister still likes my $369 memory foam bed from Amazon better than hers. She is a lot older than me and takes naps every day so when she drops over she always needs to have a nap. My younger nieces and nephews like it a lot too....except they can't jump up and down on it very well since memory foam doesn't have that innerspring characteristic.

Main reason I chose the one I linked earlier was the great reviews, the included hardware to attach a headboard and footboard (many other sellers didn't supply that at no extra cost even though same style of platform bed), the 14" rise so I have lots of usable storage underneath (and I really USE it!!! ), it's easy to put together with no tools by tightening a few wingnuts, all steel construction of thick & sturdy gauge so it will last forever, well painted to protect the steel and inhibit rust, very strong and can support 1,400 pounds (never tested that yet! ), solid built with no squeaks or other noises...even when knocking boots, easy to take down and move if needed, great price....even lower price now than what I paid by $25!

Don't know if you have an Ikea up there but they also carry a few platform beds. Other places online to check are Overstock, Wayfair [wayfair.com] (free shipping!), and Costco/Sam's Club. There are others too but those are the stores I checked. One thing to be aware of is there are several sellers of the same or very similar platform beds on Amazon and their prices vary. After deciding on which style of platform bed I wanted I checked prices among sellers and went with the best price + good reviews.

I have to agree with "420" on the bed bite issue, as well as fleas and other issues with upholstered items and/or mattresses. This is why Thrift Stores do not take mattresses in most states, it's illegal for them to do so. NOT even a Memory Foam one

First you never know what was in the people's home where these items came from. You don't know if they had animals, whether or not anyone or animal pee'd on them; as yes that is a concern. I was a Mod on a Freecycle Group; and a lot of times were had too many complaints of people going to pick up either of these type of items; getting there and finding they "stunk" to high heaven; though the people listed them in "very good condition". I'd go new, before I would take someone's used item like this

OP, you being in Alaska, is the same as someone being in Hawaii; you pay to have things delivered there, due to not being on the "mainland" - and it costs you more - I get it. But don't take the chance, unless you personally know the persona very, very, very well, that is selling the item.

The consumer still expects a completely American made product (can be found but very rare and often misrepresented as 'American made') but can still be fooled or outright lied to without knowing or recourse. Furniture is just one of the products subject to such practices. It pays to do a lot of research...or have a LOT of sisters and SIL's to tell you everything.

I'll admit it, I'm a furniture "snob" - I want it made here in the USA - and I will search high and low - until I find where it is completely and I mean "completely" made here in the USA, and well constructed too. I have done so with my new living room furniture. All of my furniture in my home was made here in the USA. Yes, most of it is now 26 years old, but then again, it is of high quality, and will not go out of style. When you buy quality, it lasts a lifetime. Again, quality over quantity. We recently needed a new end table for the living room when we purchased the new furniture for my husband's chair, and again, the search began; until we found a place that indeed made all their furniture here in the USA. In fact, there are several furniture makers right in my own area; that make custom furniture that sell exclusively to high end furniture stores. That is what I look for. I will NOT buy something made in China, in regard to furniture, I don't care if you try to tell me it is of "good quality", I'm not buying it; I've examined pieces made in China, I've gone over how they are built; and they are not built with the same standards of "fine quality furniture" of how it was made decades and decades ago.

One may go to the Market in North Carolina, and find shit as well - but you may go there and find and tour the really well made furniture that is solely made here in the USA in Highpoint, NC. I didn't travel from PA all the way down to Alexandria, VA just to look and order my furniture for no reason; it was because I knew that particular "fine quality store" knew the line of furniture, and that we were getting Made in the USA furniture when we custom ordered it. Most of our fine furniture stores have closed around us due to this sucky economy, which is a shame, because I used to be able to go to several and order what I wanted locally. This shows now how far I have to travel to get "what I want".

Name a brand of leather furniture, and I'll tell you whether or not it came out of China, with married leather covers on it Examine it against a "finely made piece from here in the USA" without married leather covers on it, and you will see a remarkable difference. But you pay for that, without the married leather covers, to get that. You also get your choice of so many different types of leather(s), and the variety is awesome, I don't know too many other manufacturer's that may compete with that

Lane furniture as a whole, has gone downhill tremendously, I wouldn't touch a piece of it, to purchase it If it's a chain store furniture store, I do not shop there. They all carry the same crappy furniture, made with the same crappy standards. Even Hendredon, which was one of the best, has lowered it's standards, which is disheartening to say the least. Pennsylvania House was one of the best, they no longer are. Hitchcock was one of the best makers of furniture, they are no longer in business, and if you own a piece of Hitchcock, hold onto it; it's valuable. Some of my pieces are Hitchcock; look them up, their chairs alone are some of the most valuable pieces out there on the market today. When was the last time you saw "true beveled glass" in a furniture piece? There is a piece I am patiently waiting to inherit, and one day, yes it will be mine. It's a beautiful piece, and that beveled glass alone, makes it priceless, plus the secretary aspect of it with the original leather inside; that is like brand new off the factory floor; and this piece is at least 80 years old. Now that is quality furniture. China cannot churn this type of furniture out
