It's not available quite yet. They're scheduled for release on the 29th, so within the next couple hours they should be activated, or tomorrow morning. Also, the prevailing opinion seems to be that there will be plenty in stock and no need to fret about ordering ASAP. But who really knows.

It's worse for overclockers since it's much harder to get over 5Ghz due to skyrocketing power consumption.
Better for average users though if you don't overclock but then any K series proc is overkill.

That's pretty much what Anandtech says. If you're not interested in using the integrated graphics, either for your display or for video conversion, stay with the Sandybridge chip you have. Though if you're building a new machine, since both the Ivy and Sandy chips have the same retail price, go with the Ivy.

If Intel started blowing out i7's, I'd be in, but I very much doubt they'll do it, it would hurt their new Ivybridge chip sales.

ok so i haven't been i the PC hardware loop in a few years, and I was about to upgrade tomorrow after like 1 day of research.

i was literally about to pick up the i5 2500k for $179 at microcenter tomorrow morning. i actually placed an order tonight online but it was too late to pick it up tonight. i also did not pay online, pay in store, so i'm not held to actually purchasing it.

i don't game at all. i am simply upgrading from my current system and what i'm going to be doing is typical browsing, irc, some java development, running application servers, and databases locally.

i don't care about overclocking at all either.

i had planned on getting 16gb ddr3 1600 ram.

seeing as these new ivy bridge cpu's are the new stuff, would i be better off just gettin one of these for $10 more instead of the 2500k i was going to get?

they didn't use fluxless solder on the ivy. They used thermal paste. It could be part of the reason they pointed to high temps when overclocking. Video is at overclockers but seen some articles debunk this as well. Basically, it simply isn't OC like it was hoped.

Due to the small transistors, the surface area of the chip is smaller than Sandy Bridge. Even though power consumption has decreased, the power density, when taking surface area into account, has increased. Basically heat can't be pumped away from the chip fast enough. So these things do get really hot when trying to overclock. Things will only get worst from now on as Intel moves into smaller and smaller processes. I guess the day of overclocking to get free performance are numbered, and each transistor process will have an optimal frequency/power envelop that balances performance and heat dissipation.
