We need to know the model # of the motherboard to see if it uses memory in pairs or not, does not mean you can't add one but 2 works better. That said if you are using the PC with 1 GB of RAM now running XP you should see a decent improvement if you add 2 1GB sticks http://www.newegg.com/Product/Pro...6820231036
But you also need to ask yourself how long are you going to hang on to XP and is it working OK for you now or not?
Cost would be 50.00 so if you plan on keeping it for more than a year I would say sure go for it, but it really is time to start looking hard at XP systems, now if you want to upgrade to Win 7 I would say go for sure.

This would be an old technology Pentium 4 rig or similar and you can be sure there is no advantage to having a pair of 512's over a single 1 gig stick.
In more recent machines, it would make a difference.
