It's all good, and it was just an offhand comment, didn't put a lot of thought into it -- until now, lol. But you asked. I'm not exagerrating though when I say tht I know a number of people whose house has a smaller footprint than that garage! Last edited by puddnhead; 04-30-2012 at 11:57 AM.. |

If you were a car collector, and you collected small sports cars, you could put 6 in his garage if the doors were on the end (which they never are for regular houses). If you had Cooper Mini's, you could park three deep (they're just over 12' long) and get nine, provided they had sunroofs so you could climb out the top. You couldn't do that if you were driving even a small/mid-sized car like the accord (16' and change each). |

now you're making me want to take out the tape & measure my garage tonight!
Ours is definitely small though. We can park our Equinox in there, but the passenger has to get out before we pull in, and there isn't a lot of clearance on the door. Googling I see it's almost exactly 6' wide by 15' long, so I'd guess the garage is maybe 17' long by 11' wide, that's about 25% more than what I estimated in my first post. But even at 187 sq ft, that dude's gargantuan garage is still > 5x the size of mine

I've seen this stuff recommended as a better alternative to what's carried at home depot/lowes:
www.ucoatit.com The floor tiles are more expensive and I wonder too about possible mold. Last edited by vulches; 04-30-2012 at 12:43 PM.. |

Just as an FYI he said his garage was 22 x 34 = 748sqft, which is basically the same size as mine. If it had been 22x42 that would be 924sqft - at least a 4 car garage, and yes bigger than many houses. My garage is not small by any means - it has huge storage cabinets, a workbench, etc. as part of it. It is one of the biggest reasons we bought the house we did, since I've accumulated a bunch of crap over the years. But I don't think it would be possible to fit more than three regular size cars (think a Toyota Corolla and a Chevy Malibu) in it. No, they wouldn't be jammed together, but I don't think you could get a 4th car in there at all. Maybe a SMART car, but that would be about it, especially with needing to open doors, etc. |

Slightly cheaper at BigFloors.com [bigfloors.com] ($1.98 / sq ft).

I installed vinyl composition tile in my 800 sq ft garage. I got most of it on sale at home depot for $8 a box marked down from $30. My point? There are cheaper and better alternatives than this product in my opinion. I can't stand the gaps in the finished product of the mototile and similar products in addition to the thickness. I understand I got a deal on the VCT which you probably can't replicate, however, I highly recommend a 2 part epoxy system even though I went with the VCT. The 2 part epoxy makes things finishing raised concrete built-ins and built in concrete steps. . A lot of people go with porcelain tile too. I love my vct which is sealed with 5 coats of sealer and wax. It mops up slick and looks like glass. I can blow it clean using my air compressor. However, the vct lacks edge strength and posed some challenges around sharp edges as my garage is raised 1.5" from the driveway and I also have built in concrete do-dads. My solutions around the physical challenges of my garage cost me time and money that would have not been required with an epoxy paint system. I ultimately decided against the epoxy system due to the extremely poor manufacturer's warantee. 1 year for 1-part, 2 years for 2 part epoxy systems. I have installed VCT floors before and new they'd last a lot longer than 2 years. My suspiciousons were the epoxy would have probably lasted a lot longer than the manufacturer's period of performance but I took that as a big issue at the time and went with VCT.
My next home's garage will have a porcelain tile floor covering for sure. I found quite a bit of good info here on various types of flooring after I did my project... http://www.garagejourn Last edited by Anger; 04-30-2012 at 05:50 PM.. |

I used epoxy on my garage floor and I do like it. I got industrial stuff from the company my brother works for (they sell to NFL teams so it's heavy duty) so I can't compare it to what a typical consumer could buy. You MUST have a clean, etched floor but it is just like painting (I used oversized rollers). Adding the paint flakes helps hide dirt and and blemishes in the concrete (if you are that concerned) and generally looks better. It can wear/flake out under the car tires though and my guess it is from the heat and pressure once parked. Another consideration is you seriously need to consider adding an aggregate, I used glass bead but most use sand type material. The epoxy is some slick shit! As in I dropped my motorcycle because I didn't realize the wife's car leaked a little oil. Water will make it crazy slippery too. Looks great and after 8 years I am ready to sand it down and do different color...got tan but it actually has a pinkish tint so time to go gray. Hope this helps somebody.
Thanks OP, I still might buy a box for under the bike. |
