My wife was about to pay full retail for a new Apple laptop the other day, and I just about $h1t myself. She wants to purchase a Macbook pro for $1700 but after being a Slickdeals lurker for a year I just can't get myself to be ok with this. The only way would be if there is a way to get discounted Apple products. A google search didn't provide much. I've heard that students can get good deals. She is a college student if that helps. Also, we live in the Portland Oregon area in case anyone knows a good place in this area.
trying to combine apple and savings is like trying to mix oil and water - don't bother.. there aren't any significant deals without large amounts of effort involved - although you could try just buying the base model and upgrading the memory and hard drive yourself
Some good CB deals around - or look at refurbished ones on the Apple site (although it annoys me to pay tax through them). I got one of mine for not any less, but I was able to use my Amazon store card to pay it off in 12 months w/no interest. Not the slickest deal, but a good way to at least save your money and hopefully earn interest (not easy to do these days, but hey, it all adds up). My motto that has served me well over the years - use other people's money when possible.
Oh, don't forget AppleCare - pricey but worth it, imo.
In addition to what has been mentioned... you can get 5% off through Target with the Red Card (debit or credit)
Did that recently with the iPhone deal where Target had a $25 rebate and the 5% and was the best deal I could find.
As everyone said, Apple is very controlling about pricing.
I've also had good experiences with the Apple refurbs through the Apple Store online - but you get what they have in stock at the time.
